The popular action game GTA 5 has received a lot of negative reviews since yesterday. The ban on modifications has angered the community.
Frustration and anger are spreading among the players of GTA 5. The reason for this is the ban on modifications and a new cease and desist order sent by GTA publisher Take-Two to the operators of the mod tool “OpenIV”.
With OpenIV, modders can change content in GTA 5 and thus integrate new textures into the game, for example. For example, the incorporation of the GTA 4 map into the current GTA 5 was planned. The tool has now been banned due to security risks.
Negative reviews as a result of the ban
The frustration that players are developing due to the mod ban is being expressed on the Steam page of GTA 5. There are already several hundred negative reviews piling up there, some of which express their anger in strong terms.
Mod ban – OpenIV exploits security vulnerabilities
The developers of the modding tool “OpenIV” stated yesterday that work on this mod has been halted due to Take-Two. Already on May 19, developer GooD-NTS received an email from Take-Two Interactive USA’s legal department requesting that all further work on “OpenIV” be stopped. The project, in which the Liberty City map is to be integrated into GTA 5 also has to be cancelled immediately.
In response to this email, the OpenIV developer asked for more information regarding Take-Two’s request. Two weeks later, a cease and desist order was issued. The justification states that the modding tool “allows third parties to bypass the security features of their software and that the modifications violate the rights of Take-Two”.
After careful consideration, the developers decided to comply with Take-Two’s demands and discontinue the OpenIV project. The decision was difficult for the modders. Because actually, OpenIV does not violate the mod rules of GTA 5. However, a court case would take months and require much time and effort just to restore the status quo.
Community bewildered and disappointed
Many players are shocked by Take-Two’s decision. OpenIV has been used for the GTA franchise for years and not only provided cool modifications for the fifth part. In the past, even Rockstar itself promoted mods from the community, as the Twitter account GTA Online News shows.
But now it seems that there will be an end to the mods. Soon there should be an official statement from Rockstar on this issue.
