On April 3rd, the long-awaited Minecraft movie hit theaters. The German YouTuber and Twitch streamer Erik “Gronkh” Range was supposed to voice a major role in the film, but after the release, the community is wondering if he can be heard at all.
What kind of role is that? When thinking of Minecraft in the German-speaking world, the YouTuber and Twitch streamer Gronkh quickly comes to mind. He was one of the first in the German-speaking area to play Minecraft, and so some fans of the video game hoped that he would have a dubbing role in the film.
Gronkh had a surprising announcement for the community when the trailer was released: He is supposed to voice the narrator of the story. This would take up a large part of the film, which not only delighted the community but also other content creators, as shown in a clip on YouTube.
Gronkh himself was also excited and said: “I really want to get ‘Hallöchen Popöchen’ in there” (via YouTube).

“I thought he was voicing the narrator”
The community is puzzled: On reddit, a user posted his astonishment about Gronkh’s speaking role: “I just came out of the Minecraft movie and didn’t recognize Gronkh’s voice anywhere. I thought he was voicing the narrator. But somehow there was no narrator.”
In fact, it seems that not Gronkh is speaking as the narrator in the film, but the voice actor Tobias Meister, who is the German voice of actor Jack Black. Nothing is heard from Gronkh as the narrator.
Is Gronkh in the Minecraft movie? The YouTuber reportedly recorded all the lines for his narrator role, but then the role was cut from the film. That’s what Lenny from the YouTube channel Cinema Strikes Back says in his critique of the Minecraft movie (via YouTube).
So, anyone going to the Minecraft movie just for Gronkh will be bitterly disappointed. Instead, the Twitch streamer only voices the character of a radio voice, and his speaking role is limited to just a few lines.
For many fans, this is likely to be a disappointment, as many associate Minecraft closely with Gronkh’s Let’s Plays or perhaps first became aware of the game through him.
For this reason, a user on reddit rules out a trip to the cinema for the Minecraft movie if Gronkh is not voicing the narrator: “Then I’ll just stay at home with my ass and wait for the Blu-ray.”
Even though the Minecraft movie probably has a very young target audience, Twitch streamers were also excited about the film. Papaplatte was one of them and could have seen the movie before its cinema release, but then he simply overslept the appointment: Twitch streamer Papaplatte gets to see the Minecraft movie before everyone else, but sleeps through it.
