A developer reveals new gameplay details about the multiplayer co-op game Godfall for PS5 and PC. Here’s everything we know about weapons, loot, and the special “Valorplate” armors.
The multiplayer game Godfall was one of the first games announced for the PS5. The developers refer to it as a “looter-slasher” and are now sharing some gameplay details in interviews.
How do the weapons work? The weapons in Godfall have a direct impact on how your character will play. The weapon class you have equipped determines the move set and combos you can use.
You will have a selection of 5 different weapon classes:
- War Hammer
- Long Sword
- Great Sword
- Dual Blades
- Polearm
These work quite classically. With the hammer, you attack slower, but hit really hard, while the fast dual blades allow you to execute rapid combos.
The Valorplates, the mighty armors you will wear in battle, do not affect your combos. So if you use Valorplate A and then switch to C, your move sets will remain the same.
There will be an upgrade system for the weapons. So if you find a spear that suits your playstyle, you can carry it with you throughout the game. As long as you continue to invest upgrades and increase the item level, you can use this weapon virtually indefinitely.
Valorplates are your classes in Godfall
How do the Valorplates work? The second part of the gameplay experience is made up of the Valorplates. These are mystical armors that grant your character their strength.
There will be a total of 12 different Valorplates in Godfall that you can unlock gradually. This happens in your player hub. To unlock some armors, you must reach a certain progress in the campaign first. However, with most plates, you can decide for yourself when to unlock them.
The Valorplates essentially function like classes in an RPG. Therefore, you will not be able to combine individual parts of different armors.
Depending on which mission you embark on or which boss you fight, you will need to choose the appropriate Valorplate. In multiplayer, the choice of plates will also be important, as the Archon abilities synergize with each other and have synergies that you can use to your advantage.

What are Archon Skills? Each armor will have its own stats, a passive ability, and an “Archon” ability. The “Archon” ability functions like an ultimate in games like Destiny or Overwatch and must be charged up during the battle.
An example of an Archon skill is Valorplate Hinterclaw. This armor revolves around critical damage, and its passive ability gives it +10% critical hit chance permanently.
When Hinterclaw uses its Archon ability, this value increases to 30%. For each enemy slain during this time, you gain 20% increased critical damage up to a cap of 200%. Additionally, Hinterclaw summons 3 “shadows” to support him in battle.
How does leveling work? The armors do not need to be leveled separately. Your character will have an overall level that applies to all plates. This means you can easily switch between different plates.
However, the Valorplates can be upgraded and enhanced. For this, you will need materials that you receive from defeated enemies in combat.
“It’s not just about the higher stats”
What about the loot? Since the Valorplates do not consist of individual parts like helmets, chest plates, or boots, these parts will not appear as loot in the game.
Instead, Godfall focuses on weapons and accessories for equipment. Amulets and other types of jewelry will have a significant impact on how the character feels and play a direct role in build variety.
The team’s motto was, according to Technical Producer Richard Heyne, “Quality over quantity.” Although there are many loot items in Godfall, the main goal of the developers was to make the drops meaningful.
This means that an item with higher stats will not always be the best choice for you. Instead, the focus is on your playstyle and builds.
You will also receive resources that you will use for upgrades of your Valorplates and weapons. Some resources will be relatively rarer than others.
How do I get loot in Godfall? There are several ways to get loot in Godfall, and they are all quite classic. You receive loot
- from regular monsters that the game throws at you to slaughter
- from mini-bosses and real boss enemies
- as rewards for missions and quests
The team’s goal was to find a balance in the drops. The loot from the bosses should always feel epic and cool. But the drops from regular enemies should also be exciting and not just end up as trash items.
Defeat the insane god and explore the world
What is Godfall about? In Godfall, you dive into the world of Aperion, which is teetering on the brink of destruction.
Your character is one of the last Valorian knights. They are powerful warriors who gain god-like strength through the “Valor Plate” armors. These armors make you masters of melee combat and allow you to utilize powerful abilities.
Your goal is to defeat the insane god Macros and his hordes of monsters that threaten the world.
What model does Godfall use? At the core of the multiplayer game is a story campaign revolving around the insane god you must take down.
However, the campaign only shows a fraction of the world of Aperion. In the endgame, you have the option to explore all areas, farm for loot for your builds, and take on new challenges.
There are no microtransactions, and the developers do not consider Godfall a “Games-as-a-Service” game.
If you want to bridge the time until the release of Godfall and are looking for new co-op games, we have a list for you.
