Some glitches and bugs can be quite annoying in Pokémon GO. But one error causes more laughter – and some fans smell a feature here.
This is the glitch: Reddit user D3d3D could hardly believe his eyes when he just fled from a battle with a wild Chikorita. Instead of reappearing normally on the map, the cute Grass Pokémon suddenly stared at him with huge eyes.
A giant Chikorita suddenly stomped around the map, which he documented in a Reddit post for posterity:
The user saw the overly large Chikorita as a direct comparison to the classic monster-lizard Godzilla. However, some Pokémon fans in the comments were reminded of another element from the Pokémon games.
When you say “glitch”, I hear “feature”
Community celebrates the glitch: On Reddit, the post is well received. The users are having fun with the picture and first assume that Niantic probably wanted to drop a subtle hint that the trainer shouldn’t even try to ignore a wild Chikorita. They give him various quotes (via Reddit) to say:
- “Where do you want to go, Trainer?”
- “Do you want to ignore me?”
- “You can’t escape”
These are some ideas from players about what the Grass Pokémon might have wanted to express with this mutation. “You say ‘glitch’, I hear ‘feature'”, User BMal-Suj (via Reddit) said excitedly about the giant Pokémon.
Is Sword & Shield involved? This also applied to players who saw a reminder of the current generation of main Pokémon games. Because in those, giant Pokémon play a literally big role.
Dynamax and Gigantamax are the phenomena that transform monsters in Pokémon Sword and Shield into gigantic and sometimes altered forms of themselves.
“I didn’t expect Niantic to bring Dynamax into the game so quickly,” said User matteeeo91 with a wink about the new “feature”.
Whether Dynamax will eventually land in Pokémon GO is of course still open. Features like Mega Evolutions from previous games or entire lines of Pokémon are still missing in the game. But who knows – maybe one day you really can catch a giant Chikorita.
