Gigantic was prominently represented at the Gamescom 2016 stand of the new publisher Perfect World, and we were even able to grab one of the developers from Motiga to show us the Hero-Shooter-Monster-MOBA. In Gigantic, it’s all about giant creatures called “Guardians.” These are what would be the enemy base in other MOBA games, and if we want to win, we must take down the opposing beast. But how does this differ from traditional MOBAs and Hero-Shooters? We were at Gamescom 2016 and asked one of the developers about it.

Battle of the Titans
First of all, there are no typical lanes and towers in Gigantic that dictate our progress in the game. Rather, the maps are more oval-shaped, and there are elevations and valleys where we can summon creatures at certain points that give us valuable buffs. However, those who rush straight to the opposing Guardian will experience a nasty surprise because the beast is very strong and cannot be defeated by our little heroes. We will need the help of our own Guardian, who can only engage the opponent if we properly supply it with power-ups.
Then the creature charges in and pounds the opponent in a titanic battle, but even the mighty Guardian can only hold the enemy down for a limited time. This is when our heroes come into play, either defending or attacking the fallen giant. If the attackers succeed, the beast takes a wound, but then frees itself, and the fight continues. To win, we must inflict three wounds. Our interview partner from Motiga said, “It’s like a dance, sometimes you go forward, sometimes back, sometimes to the side. There is always movement in the game!”
Lore in Bites
Hero-Shooters and MOBAs are already known for their crazy character designs, and Gigantic is no exception. Therefore, the game is filled with quirky beings that we can play, such as a kind of four-legged lizard or a guy with a kind of fox on his shoulder. According to our conversation partner, it’s not even clear with “Tyto the Swift” whether he (she? it??) is male or female, as the lore that unfolds in bits and pieces mentions a man and a woman behind the mask in the descriptions of various outfits.
In the interview, we were explained the background story of the game: “It’s like in Star Wars. You see, for example, in the cantina scene a few aliens and wonder what those creatures are. Or with Boba Fett, who first just appears, but everyone seems to have great respect for him. Only later do you learn more about the background.” All heroes will be unlockable for free in the game. By the way, if anyone wants to try Gigantic: The beta is expected to be playable again later this year.
