The reviews and tests of Ghost Recon Breakpoint are accumulating shortly after the release. On Metacritic, the game has an extremely low user score. Why are players rating it so poorly?
What do the reviews of Breakpoint look like? If you take a look at the Metacritic page for Ghost Recon Wildlands, you’ll see a lot of criticism in the reviews. At launch, the new installment of the Ghost Recon series barely managed to convince. The press is showering it with poor reviews, some scoring only 20 out of 100 points.
Players are even more critical, giving it 0 out of 5 points. This significantly drags down the overall score. Depending on the platform, the Metascore ranges between 57 points (for the PS4 version) and 67 points (for the Xbox One version).

Even after the beta, some fans decided that Ghost Recon Breakpoint is a good game, but a bad Ghost Recon.
What are players criticizing?
Microtransactions: A common point of criticism among user reviews is the microtransactions. It is criticized that there are too many opportunities for in-game purchases. At times, players could buy skill points right at the start. However, some of the microtransactions have already been removed from the game by Ubisoft.
One user writes, “Microtransactions to save time in a game that is supposed to require a lot of time? The best weapon right from the start? What is this, Ubisoft?”
Bugs and Problems: Players report that they frequently encounter bugs and glitches in Breakpoint and that the game gives an incomplete impression. One player writes:
“Bugs, bugs and more bugs. After the alpha testing, the closed beta, and the open beta, there are more bugs than positive points. They forced a Game-as-a-Service business model onto the Ghost Recon franchise. They destroyed what Ghost Recon stood for and turned it into a confused mess.”
Everything is repetitive: Players also complain that the content is repetitive. The content offers too little variety.
“Poor repetitive shooter aimed at taking your money through microtransactions without delivering significant gameplay,” writes one user.
Many players complain that Ubisoft failed to give this shooter an identity. The unique selling point, what Ghost Recon Breakpoint is supposed to be, is unclear.
What do players with positive ratings say? However, there are also high scores among user reviews. One user gave 10 points and writes that one shouldn’t complain about microtransactions that do not affect oneself.
Another user awards 8 points and says, “I don’t think it’s a bad game. It’s just not a Ghost Recon but should be its own series.” However, such positive reviews are rarely seen.
What is the press criticizing?
Many of the points that players criticize about Breakpoint are seen similarly by the press. The repetitive gameplay with monotonous missions, a lifeless game world without character.
VG247: A particularly harsh criticism comes from VG247, which chose the title for its review “Ghost Recon Breakpoint review – No.” They awarded only one out of five stars, 20 out of 100 points on Metacritic.
Kirk McKeand writes there: “Ubisoft failed in two areas it usually excels in—sequels and open worlds. But there is a glimmer of hope in another area: reinvention. Perhaps this concept will be completely abandoned for the next one, and we will return to the good old days when Ghost Recon was an excellent shooter with its own identity. At the moment it lacks focus, is confusing, and frustrating. A shadow of its former self.”
Push Square: The Push-Square website awarded a total of 60 out of 100 points and found more positive aspects in Breakpoint.
They write:
Ghost Recon: Breakpoint is a mostly enjoyable excursion into the open world. Provided you know what to expect. And let’s be honest, we probably know exactly what to expect. […] In co-op there is a lot of potential for fun. The freedom you have when creating a Nomad and tackling missions is the game’s greatest strength. However, a multitude of microtransactions leaves a bad taste, and the many bugs give the release a disappointingly rough feel. Robust but bloated, Breakpoint is a mishmash that has its fun moments. But it lacks identity.
GameStar: Our colleagues at GameStar summarize in a 19-minute video “why Ghost Recon: Breakpoint only makes you sad.” It is mentioned that the island Auroa fails to emotionally bind the player to the location. Additionally, after 15 hours of gameplay, the activities feel “dull.” You can find Dimitry Halley’s complete summary in the following video:
