Bad news for fans of DreamHack Leipzig. Because the popular LAN event will no longer take place in this form, and the licensor has not extended the contracts. Nevertheless, Leipzig does not want to completely neglect the topic of gaming and is planning something new. Learn everything we know about the matter here on MeinMMO!
What has been officially announced? Recently, the organization of the Leipzig Messe shared a sad announcement: The popular gaming event DreamHack Leipzig will not only be canceled in 2021 but will die forever.
The Swedish licensor DreamHack AB will therefore not continue the contract with the Leipziger Messe. Thus, there will be no further edition of DreamHack Leipzig under the direction of Leipziger Messe and their partner Schenker Technologies/XMG.
What was DreamHack? DreamHack was a local gaming festival and essentially the largest LAN party in the entire country. Every year, gamers could gather in Leipzig to play together, watch exciting eSports tournaments, and experience their favorite pro gamers live.
The last DreamHack was in January 2020 and recorded a visitor record of 23,300 fans and 2,000 players who played live. Shortly thereafter, Corona began, and in 2021, the event only took place online. At that time, we at MeinMMO were also involved.
DreamHacks take place in various locations around the world, including Valencia, London, Montreal, and Stockholm.
Licensor withdraws, but organizers do not give up
What do the organizers say about it: Despite the bad news from Sweden, the Leipzig Messe is fighting and is by no means ready to simply let the matter go. Because – according to the organizers – they know how to put together a decent gaming event.
That’s why the organizers confidently tweet:
“We promise you: We will be back. See you again next Thursday in the stream! <3”
How is the situation received by the fans? The fans of DreamHack are understandably upset about the end of “their” event and are glad that the organizers do not want to simply stop. They hope that there will still be a comparable event in Germany, as very few want to travel to other countries for a LAN.

- co_Jack via Twitter: “It feels a bit like canceling Christmas… it has always been a great time and was actually a tradition! I hope there will be a Christmas 2.0 soon; otherwise, I don’t know how I will meet all the awesome people at once.”
There clearly isn’t a lack of support and interest from the community. It remains to be seen what the organizers will reveal in their stream soon.
