On Sunday, the “Celebrity Dinner” aired on free TV on Vox featuring two well-known German gaming influencers: Twitch streamer Papaplatte and voice actress, streamer, and influencer Lara Loft. However, the show failed in the ratings – apparently, many fans of both simply don’t have a TV anymore.
What kind of show was it?
- On Sunday, June 19, at 8:15 PM, the show Celebrity Dinner aired on Vox, which is a spin-off of the show “The Perfect Dinner”.
- The aim of the show is to prepare a “perfect dinner”, cook well, and prove oneself as a host. The invited guests rate the host on a scale from 0 to 10.
- Normally, the candidates cook for each other over 5 episodes – but in the Celebrity Dinner, all individual dinners are recorded and then edited together in one show.
Who were the guests? For the start of a new season, Vox specifically invited “the Social Media Generation”. The 4 guests were:
- The German Twitch streamer Kevin “Papaplatte” Teller – he is one of the largest German gaming streamers on Twitch, although somewhat scatterbrained and often in conflict with the rules.
- Laura “Lara Loft” Trautmann – an influencer and voice actress strongly associated with gaming. She can also be heard in Cyberpunk 2077.
- The YouTuber “MAX” was previously known for his Minecraft streams under the name “Krancrafter”, but now focuses entirely on cooking.
- The YouTuber Vanessa “Malwanne” Maria Gierszweski creates creative videos on YouTube, including product tests.
Papaplatte narrowly loses with “legendary MontanaBlack noodle casserole”
How did it turn out? The gaming streamers lost against the YouTubers:
- MAX and Malwanne each scored 27 points and shared the victory.
- Papaplatte landed in 3rd place with 25 points with the “legendary MontanaBlack noodle casserole” as the main dish (via YouTube).
- Lara Loft ended up last with 24 points.
MontanaBlack presented his “noodle casserole” as a secret recipe a few years ago:
Poor ratings for Celebrity Dinner with German Twitch stars
How were the ratings? The ratings were really poor – the extremely low numbers were highlighted in a separate article by an industry magazine.
According to dwdl, only 350,000 viewers watched the show, which corresponds to a market share of just 1.6%. Even among the “younger viewers”, it only reached a market share of 3.9%.
The show was overshadowed among the 14-49-year-olds by the crime scene on ARD (21.3% market share), Suicide Squad on Pro7 (12.3%), and San Andreas (8.4%).
Apparently little overlap between Celebrity Dinner and gamers
What was the reason? Looking at the social media posts of the influencers who promoted the show reveals the issue: Many viewers of Lara Loft and Papaplatte simply don’t have a TV anymore.
Again and again, people ask where they can “watch it online”? They haven’t had a TV for years. If they watch anything at all, it’s only Netflix or Amazon Prime.
Moreover, it seems that influencers polarize greatly: Among the regular viewers of Vox, many don’t even know who these people from the internet are or find it hard to connect with them, as indicated by the posts of people watching Celebrity Dinner, regardless of who’s cooking.
It also seems that Vox has little contact points with the influencers. There are repeated reports of astonishment about this “Social Media Generation”, as if they were strange beings from an uncharted parallel world.
Regarding Papaplatte, it was said that he is “one of the 10 largest gaming streamers in the world”. This is somewhat exaggerated: he ranks 159th in followers among all Twitch channels.
TV networks have often tried to see if what works on Twitch can also succeed on TV. So far, with rather mediocre success:
Twitch star Knossi has been hosting a TV show by Stefan Raab for a month – How’s it going?
