Geoff Keighley is known as the host of numerous gaming shows. In 2020, he founded his own event, which will showcase a variety of trailers this year, while the E3 has been canceled again.
Who is Geoff Keighley?
- Geoff Keighley is a Canadian video game journalist, particularly known as the host of numerous gaming events.
- Keighley regularly hosts major shows where many trailers are shown, including the annual Game Awards and the Opening Night Live of gamescom.
- In 2020, Keighley launched his own gaming event called the “Summer Game Fest.”
What gaming event is it about? The Summer Game Fest (SGF) founded by Keighley in 2020 gives video game publishers and developers the opportunity to present their new games in detail with trailers or even announce them for the first time.
The event takes place digitally and is specifically aimed at companies that do not hold their own events like the PlayStation Showcase, Ubisoft Forward, or the Xbox & Bethesda Showcase.
During the show hosted by Keighley himself, gaming fans experience a true barrage of trailers, just like at SGF 2022. Cinematics and gameplay footage are shown every minute – there is not much talking between the individual games.
The Summer Game Fest 2023 will take place on June 8, 2023, starting at 9:00 PM. MeinMMO will accompany the event with a live ticker.
“The E3 has somewhat killed itself”
What does Keighley say about the death of the E3? In a podcast with the English online magazine VideoGamesChronicle, Geoff Keighley commented on the death of the E3 – the formerly largest gaming event of the year will not take place in 2023. The E3 was also canceled in 2022.
In the podcast, Keighley was addressed about being considered the “E3 Killer,” to which he responded:
I think the E3 has somewhat killed itself. I understand why people say that [the SGF killed the E3], but I think if anything, we have launched the Summer Game Fest, and I built the Summer Game Fest because I saw that the E3 was falling behind.

Keighley also adds that he did not see himself in competition with the E3, as the Summer Game Fest is a purely digital show that is live streamed. He wanted to create a way to bring gaming news to the fans in 2020 when the E3 was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
For 2023, Keighley assumed that the SGF and E3 would go their separate ways and not be in competition with each other. His event would take place digitally and show trailers, while the E3 would do its part at the convention center in Los Angeles.
As the cause for the death of the E3, Keighley suspects in the podcast that the E3 has had a relevance and participation problem in recent years and asked the question of what would have happened if they had not founded the SGF.
Shortly after the cancellation of the E3 2023, Keighley spoke about the death of the gaming event. He noted that he had suspected since 2019 that the E3 had no future.
