Since the update 2.1, there are two new islands in Genshin Impact in Inazuma. One of them is called Watatsumi and houses one of the most complicated puzzles in the game so far. MeinMMO explains the puzzle in detail and provides the solutions.
What is it about? It’s about the puzzle with the eight dice on Watatsumi, some of which can be moved and others cannot. Next to the puzzle lies a book that explains how it is supposed to work. However, you need to think thoroughly and ideally have a pen and paper or Paint ready. This puzzle cannot be solved easily in your head.
This puzzle can be solved a total of three times. You either have to log in again to start at the position of the dice, or you teleport to another location and then back again. Each time, the dice change, and a different sequence is being sought.
Want a quick solution? Then you can use the table of contents to jump to the section “Simple and quick solution for all dice puzzles“. For those of you who just need a little nudge for the puzzle and would like to solve it themselves, the explanations follow now.
Location of the dice puzzle
Where exactly can you find the puzzle? The puzzle is located southeast on the mountain that runs around the Sangonomiya Shrine on Watatsumi. It is directly above the teleporter that is also located there.
This is how the dice puzzle works on Watatsumi
Do you remember the Sudoku puzzle? This puzzle is essentially that. For some, this hint could already be conclusive, but we want to explain the procedure step by step. We will focus on the explanation that the game gives us.
First, it is explained which numbers are assigned to the “normal” blocks. Each number represents a cardinal direction:
- 1 = North
- 2 = East
- 3 = South
- 4 = West
The “normal” blocks are those on which no additional stone has been placed. You always have four of them.
Next, it continues. In the next section, it is explained which numbers are assigned to the blocks that have an additional stone slab. There are also four of these. The same procedure is followed as with the first dice:
- 5 = North
- 6 = East
- 7 = South
- 8 = West
How can you recognize the cardinal direction? On your mini-map, you can see where North is. In addition, each cube has a purple flower pattern. This indicates the direction the cube is currently pointing.
Then you are told that one is missing between two cubes. This gets the number 9. Usually, it is important that the blocks start to glow in some way. In other dice puzzles, this resulted in patterns or similar. In this puzzle, however, it doesn’t matter. You can completely ignore this.
Finally, it is important to note that the sum of the numbers is always the same diagonally, horizontally, and vertically. This means that you have to add in every direction.
What else is important? What the explanation does not tell you is that you cannot move some blocks. These are broken on one side or have a piece missing from their corners. If you pay attention, you do not need to check each cube individually to see if it can be moved. Even cubes with an additional stone slab can be broken and unmovable.
Solution to the 1st dice puzzle on Watatsumi
Solution path for the first puzzle: First, you can assign numbers to the broken dice. Standing directly in front of the puzzle, we start in the back row:
- Back row:
- Middle cube = 3
- Right cube = 8
- Middle row:
- Missing cube on the left = 9
- Right cube = 1
- Front row:
- Left cube = 2
Now you are missing four numbers that you have not assigned. This can be solved in various ways. We started from the highest result of the assigned numbers: 11. We complemented this with the smallest available number: 4. The result is a total of 15.
Based on that, you can check with the remaining numbers vertically, horizontally, and diagonally whether everywhere the sum comes to 15. Starting again in the back row, we can draw the following solution:
- Back row:
- Left cube = 4 (West)
- Middle cube = 3 (South)
- Right cube = 8 (West)
- Middle row:
- Missing cube on the left = 9
- Middle cube = 5 (North)
- Right cube = 1 (North)
- Front row:
- Left cube = 2 (East)
- Middle cube = 7 (South)
- Right cube = 6 (East)
Solution path for the 2nd dice puzzle on Watatsumi
Solution path for the second puzzle: First, you can assign numbers to the broken dice. Standing directly in front of the puzzle, we start in the back row:
- Back row:
- Missing cube in the middle = 9
- Right cube = 2
- Middle row:
- Left cube = 3
- Front row:
- Left cube = 8
- Right cube = 6
You are again missing four numbers that you have not assigned. This can be solved again in various ways. We started from the highest result of the assigned numbers: 14. We complemented this with the smallest available number: 1. The result is a total of 15.
Based on that, you can check with the remaining numbers vertically, horizontally, and diagonally whether everywhere the sum comes to 15. Starting again in the back row, we can draw the following solution:
- Back row:
- Left cube = 4 (West)
- Missing cube in the middle = 9
- Right cube = 2 (East)
- Middle row:
- Left cube = 3 (South)
- Middle cube = 5 (North)
- Right cube = 7 (South)
- Front row:
- Left cube = 8 (West)
- Middle cube = 1 (North)
- Right cube = 6 (East)
Solution path for the 3rd dice puzzle on Watatsumi
Solution path for the third puzzle: First, you can assign numbers to the broken dice. Standing directly in front of the puzzle, we start in the back row:
- Back row:
- Middle cube = 7
- Middle row:
- Missing cube on the left = 9
- Middle cube = 5
- Right cube = 1
- Front row:
- Middle cube = 3
Since you can already calculate the complete middle for this puzzle, you get the required and correct sum: 15. Now you can enter the missing numbers to ensure everything also adds up to 15. It is easiest to orient yourself based on the left vertical row. The solution is as follows:
- Back row:
- Left cube = 2 (East)
- Middle cube = 7 (South)
- Right cube = 6 (East)
- Middle row:
- Missing cube on the left = 9
- Middle cube = 5 (North)
- Right cube = 1 (North)
- Front row:
- Left cube = 4 (West)
- Middle cube = 7 (South)
- Right cube = 8 (West)
Simple and quick solution for all dice puzzles
The solutions for all puzzles are as follows, when you stand directly in front of all the cubes:
- 1st dice puzzle
- Back row:
- Left: West
- Middle: South
- Right: West
- Middle row:
- Left: Missing
- Middle: North
- Right: North
- Front row:
- Left: East
- Middle: South
- Right: East
- Back row:
- 2nd dice puzzle
- Back row:
- Left: West
- Middle: Missing
- Right: East
- Middle row:
- Left: South
- Middle: North
- Right: South
- Front row:
- Left: West
- Middle: North
- Right: East
