In Genshin Impact, you need to meet requirements to play with friends in multiplayer co-op. Luckily, these are not too hard to achieve.
What is it about? Genshin Impact just launched recently, on September 27, on PC, PS4, and mobile devices. Right from the start, the free RPG has been celebrated by many players. You can control more than 20 different characters, explore the world and dungeons, solve puzzles, and fight world bosses. Players can hardly believe that the co-op RPG is free.
You can play the whole adventure and the search for your lost twin alone. If you want, you can also experience it in co-op with up to three other friends. However, this option is not available right at the beginning of the game. Multiplayer is a feature that needs to be unlocked.
How to unlock co-op/multiplayer in Genshin Impact
Reach this rank: To unlock it, you should reach at least level 16 in Adventure Rank (Adventurer level). But don’t confuse this with your character’s level. Adventure Rank is tied to your account and can be checked in the menu next to your name.
You increase your Adventure Rank by completing quests. It may take a few hours until you reach level 16. If you try to invite friends before level 16, you will receive an error message.
Since this progress is tied to the account, you only need to achieve it once and can then play co-op with all characters you create.
Next steps: Once you have reached level 16 in Adventure Rank, you can invite up to three other players to join you on your adventures. Together, you can complete daily quests or hunt monsters and bosses in the open world.

Inviting friends – Here’s how
Sending friend invitations: To invite friends, simply open the menu and select the “Friends” option. There you can see all your friends who are currently online on the same platform.
Crossplay in Genshin Impact – How does it work?
Crossplay with friends: If you want to play Genshin Impact with friends via crossplay, that is also possible. You need to add friends with their UID number, which can be found in the bottom right corner of the game screen.
Keep in mind that every friend you invite to multiplayer must have already reached level 16 in Adventure Rank.
- Crossplay exists between PC, iOS/Android, and PS4 only if all players are on the same server (EU, NA, or Asia)

What limitations does co-op have in Genshin Impact?
What you need to keep in mind: In your group, you can play in co-op with a maximum of four players.
During co-op play, you cannot complete main quests (i.e., the story).
You also cannot use the Spiral Abyss or the shop.
- While you are in another player’s world, you cannot pick up Oculi, open chests, and can only interact with the Statue of The Seven to a limited extent
- At the statues, you can still restore the health points of your characters
- The host player can still perform these actions
