What are the penalties for? In the co-op mode of Gears 5, players compete in teams of three and complete missions together or play in PvP in rounds of 5vs5.
The problem is that the mission or a round is almost doomed to fail for the team as soon as someone leaves the group. Since their spot is not taken and remains empty, the other players can more or less give up on the round.

According to investigations by Microsoft, some players have left 18 of their 21 started rounds early – and that within just one day. These players then received the full penalty immediately.
Microsoft has already put a lot of effort into making Gears 5 successful. This step to ban leavers is likely intended to keep interested players engaged.
