On January 12, 2021, the new banner featuring the 5-star character Ganyu launches. She looks really nice so far, but you should save your Primogems. MeinMMO explains why.
This character is about: Ganyu is a new 5-star character that will be released on January 12, 2021, with the banner “Fleeting Encounters.” From then on, you can pull her from the banner until February 2, 2021.
Ganyu is an eager follower of the Geo God Rex Lapis and formed a contract with him thousands of years ago, which she faithfully fulfills every day, as it also serves the well-being of the people of Liyue.
She is a Cryo character and fights like Amber or Fischl with a bow, taking out enemies from a distance.
Ganyu actually looks promising
Ganyu has potential: Those who read through various Subreddits of Genshin Impact will find that her abilities are praised. Her abilities “Trail of the Qilin” and “Dispersing Incident” deal large damage and are said to be especially deadly in combination with Klee.
Many characters only unleash their full potential once you upgrade their Constellation. This enhances skills, reduces cooldowns, or provides other buffs to the characters.
However, to upgrade the Constellation to the maximum of 6, you must pull the character multiple times from the banner because that’s the only way to get the “Stella Fortuna,” which you need to upgrade the Constellation.
This means: In principle, characters can already be very strong without their Constellation. A Constellation is therefore not necessarily required at first.
However, it is also a fact that the Constellation can significantly increase damage: For example, Fischl’s ultimate ability increases damage by 200% and range by 50% when the Constellation is upgraded to the second level.
Sites like Gamerant see Constellations as the real gacha trap of Genshin Impact: Because it’s not just about pulling the desired character, but also about fully unleashing their potential. This way, you can quickly spend a lot of money in the Genshin Impact gacha system.

What does Ganyu’s Constellation even bring me?
You can upgrade Ganyu’s Constellation a total of 6 levels. The following upgrades are available (via gamerant.com):
- At level 1, the Cryo resistance of enemies is reduced by 15% for 6 seconds.
- At level 2, “Trail of the Qilin” receives an additional charge.
- At level 3, “Dispersing Incident” is increased by three levels.
- At level 4, enemies standing in “Dispersing Incident” will take additional area damage. This starts at 5% and increases by an additional 5% every second. If the enemy leaves the area, the effect lasts for an additional three seconds.
- At level 5, the level of “Trail of the Qilin” is increased by three.
- At level 6, after using “Trail of the Qilin,” you can fire a charged shot immediately.
Is it needed? The upgrades increase damage, but are not fundamentally necessary to make Ganyu an effective fighting character, as she has her own unique playstyle.
Especially in combination with Pyro, Hydro, or Electro characters, she is likely to unleash her true strength.
Pulling 5-star characters multiple times is very unlikely. The chance of pulling one in 10 wishes is 0.6%. You only have a guarantee after 90 wishes, and even then you might pull other 5-star characters.
Even for characters with guarantees it may take 28,800 Primogems or approximately 375 Euros in the worst case before you’ve pulled the hero. Therefore, an upgraded Constellation is likely far out of reach for many players.
Genshin Impact: “Fleeting Encounters” – is it worth it?
This is what you get in the banner: In addition to the 5-star character Ganyu, you can also pull
- Xiangling (A-Tier)
- Xianqui (A-Tier)
- Noelle (C-Tier)
from the wish. In total, there are two good characters and one average character alongside Ganyu.
Important to know: Players can guarantee Noelle through the beginner’s banner, while Xiangling can be unlocked with some effort at Adventure Rank 20. So if you’ve been playing Genshin Impact for a while, you likely already have two of the three characters highlighted on January 12, 2021.
What you should consider with the banner: In general, it can be quite interesting to upgrade the Constellations of characters if you actually play them. If you do not play the characters, there are few reasons why you should actively use the banner:
- Xiangling is a good DPS support, but there are significantly better candidates in this area than Xingqiu and Fischl.
- Noelle is a good tank with support abilities, but there are significantly better supporters like Barbara, Bennet, or previously mentioned Diona.
In the last banner “Mysterious Words” alongside the 5-star character Albedo, there were two strong characters with Bennet and Fischl and a decent character, Saccharose.
The alchemist Albedo could be met during the “Chalk and Dragons” event and complete various tasks. Meanwhile, a new event has started. On January 12, 2021, the Albedo wish will be replaced by the Ganyu wish.
Does Ganyu have competition?
For those solely interested in the combination of ice and bow, Genshin Impact has what you need. The 4-star character Diona also offers the combination of ice abilities and bow and is a 4-star character.
However, the comparison doesn’t quite hold, as Diona is a supporter and Ganyu is currently set up as a damage dealer focusing on burst and area damage.
Thanks to her burst damage and healing abilities, Diona is regarded as a good support and is therefore ranked A on our MeinMMO tier list for Genshin Impact.
