Today, on August 25, 2021, gamescom 2021 kicks off. The Opening Night Live starts at 8:00 PM. We expect many new trailers and information about games like Call of Duty: Vanguard, Farcry 6, or Genshin Impact. We at MeinMMO will accompany the event with a live ticker and show you all the new trailers.
When does the show start? The show starts at 8:00 PM on August 25, 2021. A pre-show starts at 7:30 PM.
Where can you watch it? The show will be broadcast on the Twitch channel of gamescom (via twitch). You can also follow the stream via Monsters And Explosions, the joint Twitch channel of GameStar, GamePro, and MeinMMO (via twitch).
What can we expect this evening at the Opening Night? The gaming journalist Geoff Keighley will guide you through the program together with Natascha Becker from Webedia. Keighley previously organized and moderated the “Summer Game Fest” in June 2021 before E3.
We can expect live music, presentations, and reveals, and most of all trailers, trailers, and more trailers.

10:04 PM: We have found and embedded 42 trailers for the Opening Night so far. That was the expected barrage of trailers. The number of trailers will surely increase in the next few minutes.
10:03 PM: Keighley bids farewell until December 2021 and the Game Awards.
9:54 PM: The spotlight of gamescom 2021 goes to Death Stranding. Keighley’s enthusiasm for Hideo Kojima is well known and well documented.
9:50 PM: Keighley raves about Sifu, feeling like a classic “Kung Fu” movie. As tradition demands, the protagonist’s family is brutally murdered. Coming on February 22, 2022.
9:48 PM: Aloy from Horizon Zero Dawn is coming to Genshin Impact. We see a new trailer – Aloy takes down some of those Genshin characters. She appears in the game on September 1.
A “Special Event” is planned: a new concert. This is a move from the “Fortnite” playbook. The concert will take place on October 3.
9:47 PM: World of Tanks wins the award for “most Russian trailer of gamescom 2021” – they have held the title for a decade now.
9:46 PM: This must be Crossfire X, the “Counterstrike of South Korea” – it’s coming to us in a new edition. It’s an action shooter. The trailer shows maps and mechs. It should come “soon”.
9:42 PM: The favorite game of Ragnar Lodbrok, Floki, Rollo, and every other Viking: Valheim. An update on “Base-Building” is coming. We see a comic trailer: Vikings in the snow, carrying a severed dragon head on their back. “Hearth & Home” is the name of the update, scheduled to release on September 16.
9:40 PM: In honor of gamescom, a strategy game is coming: Age of Empires IV. Germans love real-time strategy, as everyone knows.
Uh, “Mighty Landsknechte” – that’s how units should be named. My liege!
Release is supposed to be on October 28.
9:38 PM: Fall Guys gets a guest from Disney: beans in jungle costumes. “King Louie” from The Jungle Book makes an appearance.
9:37 PM: A short trailer for “Replaced” is visible. It looks quite mysterious.
9:36. The DJ with the giant mouse head instead of a normal human head showcases the gaming platform Core and promotes it. Says there are many addictive games there.
9:35 PM: The show is rolling out a few “trailers without much context”. Jumanji and “Lost Judgment”.
9:33 PM: Sifu, Genshin Impact, and Death Stranding are still missing. There’s sure to be more – information about these games was announced.
9:31 PM: “Tales of Arise” looks nice.
9:30 PM: We see “Tales of Luminaria”, a mobile game for iOS and Android.
9:28 PM: For fans of online games, the Opening Night of gamescom 2021 offers relatively marginal information. The most important news so far is surely the new open beta for New World. Cross your fingers that we will see something about Lost Ark. Jeff Bezos, have mercy on us weary MMORPG fans if you can still hear us from outer space!
9:24 PM: A mobile action RPG “Marvel Future Revolution” is coming. The game can now be downloaded for free on iOS and Android.
9:23 PM: Game Director Scott Lane talks about the feedback after the closed beta and how it has inspired the team. Lane now invites everyone to check out the game.

Open Beta for New World coming soon
9:20 PM: New World is next. The open beta starts on September 9. This is new. It was speculated that another beta would come after the release was postponed by one month.
A new gamescom trailer provides an introduction to New World, looks fantastic, and promises a lot of action. They really know how to highlight the unique art style of the game. It looks like a massive MMO with horror and fantasy elements and a refreshingly different look.
The open beta for New World starts on September 9 and ends on September 12.

9:18 PM: Information is coming about Horizon: Forbidden West, the game about Aloy, the legitimate successor of Lara Croft. There was a delay due to Corona. The release is on February 18, 2022, for PS4, PS5. Pre-orders will start next week.
9:17 PM: We see a trailer for “The Far Shore”, a sci-fi game that is scheduled for release on October 5, 2021. The trailer feels like a breather compared to the barrage of the last minutes.
9:13 PM: The next game takes us to an amusement park. Colorful visuals – it’s probably a “you build an amusement park simulation”. The game is called “Park Beyond”.
9:12 PM: A vampire game is visible: Vampire: Blood Hunt.
9:07 PM: Get ready for Far Cry 6 – the “Gus from Breaking Bad” show. 20 seconds into the presentation and Keighley is already in the praises of actor Giancarlo Esposito.
Yep, even the next story trailer focuses on the charismatic villain. Confronted with critical questions about “child labor” and “slavery”. Immediately looks like he would love to cut the throat of the questioner.
9:05 PM: A release date for Jurassic Park: Evolution 2 is coming. The best part of Jurassic Park is, once again, the fantastic goosebumps soundtrack and the obligatory scene where a T-rex eats a lesser dino.
The game is supposed to come on November 9.
9:01 PM: Now we go to the MMO area: DokeV is from the makers behind “Black Desert”, Pearl Abyss. Should showcase their new engine. Immediately gives off a “kids have vacations and go on adventures” vibe.
DokeV is supposed to be a casual/social MMO – the target audience is probably children and teenagers.
The gag of DokeV is probably that you play together with huge magical fantasy creatures… hopefully without taking drugs. That would be a very strange message.

9:00 PM: The next entry in the “horror game” category – everyone is afraid of life-sized dolls, right?
Sounds like “crazy scientist and cursed haunted house”: The Outlast Trials, scheduled for 2022.
8:59 PM: Synced is a “new type of shooter”, they say. But from the material, it’s unclear what this new type of shooter is supposed to be.
8:56 PM: The frequency of trailers is reaching critical dimensions again, giving the games a maximum of 40 seconds. Now let’s breathe a bit: Star Wars – Lego. Lego Yoda is arguing with Lego Luke. It’s scheduled to come out in Spring 2022. Looks quite nice.
8:55 PM: A trailer for a “notably fair” football game, sounds like a challenge to FIFA and EA.
8:54 PM: A short trailer for a game where you are a dragon. Much more probably won’t stick.
8:47 PM. Ubisoft shows Rider’s Republic. A collection of “extreme sports” modes. It always seems to me like a party game promoting a trendy and modern lifestyle for people who regard “knee pain” or “heights fear” as media inventions.
50 people on BMX bikes are plunging into an abyss while people with jetpacks are flying over them. A beta runs until August 28.

8:45 The surprise hit Splitgate is making an appearance. Season Zero is being revealed – the release is now for gamescom.
8:43: And we are back in the trailer onslaught. “Super Monkey Ball” is making its appearance. Apparently, this is a series about monkeys in balls that has escaped my attention for 25 years. The new game consists of numerous mini-games. Something like “Monkeys in balls playing tennis”, “Super Mario Kart, but with monkeys in balls”, and “Rocket League if you like monkeys in balls”. Release is on October 5, 2021.
8:41: The GameStar presenter Natascha Becker with a short interlude.
8:38: The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are back. Graphics are, to put it mildly, “totally retro”. Sidescrolling beat ’em up.
8:37: Midnight Fight Express comes from a single developer. Over-the-top action in ISO view. You dance and fight through hordes of enemies. Feels like Streets of Rage, but you are Jet Li. Set for summer 2022.
8:34: 2022 will see the release of “Cult of the Lamb” from the rather insane studio Devolver Digital. A cute little lamb gets beheaded and seeks brutal revenge. Everyone knows: Don’t mess with the lamb.
Leya says: It looks like “Don’t Starve meets The Binding of Isaac”. And Leya knows her stuff.

Halo Infinite campaign and multiplayer are coming by the end of 2021
8:34: Halo gets its own Xbox. Microsoft will not miss any opportunity.
8:28 PM: An initial story trailer for Halo Infinite featuring the iconic armor. The trailer feels a bit like Overwatch: Halo Edition.
A developer talks about Halo Infinite multiplayer. The release of multiplayer and campaign is set for December 8, 2021.
8:26 PM: Important info from the trailer: Houses in Stalingrad also serve as free climbing walls. The release date is November 5.
8:24 PM: The Call of Duty trailer for the campaign starts with full action, before then beginning the exposition after “1 Hours Earlier”. In the chat one person immediately types “Skip pls” – please fast forward. Then comes the plane attack.
8:22 PM: You can already see that the “big games” are being allotted significantly more time. The segment on Call of Duty is already going longer than the first three games combined from gamescom.
Call of Duty becomes more feminine – Sniper as a perspective bearer
8:13 Call of Duty: Vanguard gets its 10 minutes in the spotlight. The game is supposed to be “a completely new look at World War II.” Players are to illuminate all the major war scenes of World War II and empathize with the diverse perspectives of the various combats, especially the stories of the “Special Forces” units.
An actress talks about the important roles women played in the Soviet army. She mentions a famous female sniper. Laura Bailey plays “Polina Petrova”. She started World War II as a nurse but became a cold-hearted hardened fighter.
German voices in the English Call of Duty trailer. That’s not a good sign. Within seconds the kill count is already at 3. That also explains the “FSK 18” warning before the start of the show.

8:10: The award for the “edgiest trailer of gamescom” already goes to the new Marvel game. Wolverine unsheathes his claws, Ghost Rider glows, and a strange cover of “Enter Sandman” plays. “Marvel’s Midnight Suns” is from Firaxis, the creators behind Civilization and XCOM. Coming in March 2022.
The game is supposed to be a “tactical RPG”. Relationships with heroes are key. Badly put: It can only get better than Marvel’s Avengers.
Also important:
- The person who gets resurrected is a completely new superhero created in collaboration with Marvel.
- Midnight Suns is a tactical RPG where you can build relationships with other heroes.
- The relationships are just as important as items, equipment, and other gameplay elements.

8:06 PM: An actress says that the team has reinvented Saints Row and thought of it anew from the ground up. Saints Row takes place in a “vibrant city overflowing with violence”.
What we know so far:
- Set in the city of Santo Ileso, a fictional city in the heart of the American Southwest.
- A group of young friends builds their own gang to reach the top of the criminal underworld.
- It’s the largest Saints Row so far.
8:03 PM: The gamescom opens with a trailer for a new game. The trailer feels a bit like The Fast and The Furious: Saints Row Edition. Neon-colored chase scenes in candy-action. Bearded muscle-men with rocket launchers.
The game is Saints Row. The release is on February 25, 2022. That was probably the first highlight.

8:02 PM: The Gamescom starts with friendly greetings to Germany. There are hopes to be back there next year, in the home of the fair.
7:59 PM: From the makers behind Tomb Raider comes Dreamcycle (Steam). Horror in all its forms seems to be quite present in the game lineup for 2022.
7:58 PM: The trailer for “Soundfall” looks like a preview of an animated series from the 80s, which someone tells you about at a party and you say: “Ah, I haven’t thought about that in 35 years!”
7:52 PM: The pre-show and the main show for Opening Night Live is not taking place in Cologne, but in a studio in Los Angeles. There is a short, recorded interview with the mastermind behind the event, Geoff Keighley. He emphasizes how difficult it is to organize such a live event during Corona. At least some live performances will be included today.
Keighley naturally mentions his BFF Kojima. Apparently, surprisingly many people are excited about the new LEGO game. A “more detailed presentation” of Call of Duty: Vanguard is also teased.
7:51 PM: Nobody Saves the World is an action RPG with online coop. Very unique art style. Oh, there’s a horse that can shoot with a bow. Hoof-tastic.
7:48 PM: As expected, there’s a barrage of trailers in the pre-show. The next game has a strong sci-fi horror vibe: men in space suits running away from shadowy aliens with red blades. Dolmen. Coming in 2022 for Xbox and PS4, PS5.
7:45 PM: A trailer for “House of Ashes” starts with a Mexican standoff: “Put the gun down – No, you put the gun down!” Scheduled for release on October 22, 2021, for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One. Looks somewhat like military horror.
7:43 PM: Next, we see a trailer for “Bus Simulator 2021” with good mood music and a bus. Reminds a bit of the endless train rides through Germany shown at night on the third programs. Release is scheduled for September 7, 2021. One of our editors is such a big fan of Bus Simulator that he bought a steering wheel for it.
7:41 PM: “Nine to Five” is a 3vs3vs3 shooter. Looks like a classic first-person shooter, is supposed to come to Steam.
7:38 PM: The pre-show begins with a trailer for King of Fighter 15. The game is supposed to offer 39 different fighters. Has an extremely high Asia factor. Over 9000. The release is on February 17, 2022.
7:30 PM: The pre-show begins around 7:38 PM. A countdown is running down.
7:28 PM: 40 new games in 120 minutes – that’s about 3 minutes per game. The time will probably not be evenly distributed. Something like Far Cry 6 will get 7-8 minutes and a smaller indie game will have to settle for 60 seconds.
The marketing concept for Far Cry 6 consists so far of something like “The game doesn’t matter, we have Gus from Breaking Bad. Please include him in every trailer!”
More than 40 games will be presented at the Opening Night of gamescom.
7:25 PM: The latest information is that there should be over 40 games. Keighley announced this shortly before the start of the pre-show on Twitter (via twitter).
6:11 PM: A tweet shows how gamescom is during “normal times” for visitors: A meeting point where many beautiful and lasting memories are made.
2021 in corona times, gamescom will primarily be: A 2-hour live stream with an estimated new trailer every 2 minutes and some longer segments where Hollywood stars or developers are featured. That’s at least the experience. Nice too, but a different kind of nice.
4:49 PM: Keighley has been tweeting a lot about the Opening Night for several hours. This morning at 5 AM, a tweet came out: They had just finished the dress rehearsal. Keighley addressed the fans (via twitter). He promised two hours of “video games”, a lot of information, and a few “fun surprises”. The show is supposed to be a presentation for “all the games that are to be released by Christmas 2021 and throughout 2022,” he promised.
This is likely to be a barrage of trailers.
3:53 PM: Here’s a little appetizer trailer that Keighley made a few days ago to build excitement for the Opening Night of gamescom 2021. If after this you don’t want to watch gamescom, you probably have other worries than video games.

This will be the Opening Night Live of gamescom. It will be hosted by Geoff Keighley and Natascha Becker.
Some German streamers are hosting a charity stream, to help victims of the flood disaster. Other major streamers like Gronkh, Trymacs, and Papaplatte are joining with the game party for their own event.
It is expected that already announced games such as Battlefield 2042, New World, Lost Ark, Far Cry 6, or Call of Duty: Vanguard will be featured.
