A gamer found a supposedly defective gaming laptop for only 60 US dollars. However, the device works perfectly, as he realized.
Most gamers likely won’t purposely buy defective hardware, as in most cases it means a lot of work. And often, the effort isn’t worth it. One gamer has been very lucky. According to 3djuegos.com, a gamer would have bought a gaming laptop for 60 US dollars (around 56 euros).
Notebook functions without the display unit on a monitor
The seller indicated that the model was defective and that he could only sell the lower part. A display unit was therefore not included.
However, the gamer quickly realized, he explained on Reddit, that the sold model was an Asus Zephyrus G16. This version sells for at least 1,700 euros and more, and it is part of Asus’s high-end series (via rog.asus.com). Under the brand “ROG”, Asus sells high-end models, while its TUF series markets more budget-friendly models.
He took the risk and bought the device for so little money. Because in the worst-case scenario, he could at least remove and reuse the SSD and RAM. That would then have been covered by the 67 euros.
At home, he was then able to connect the device to his monitor with a new power cable and a display cable, and the laptop started up smoothly and perfectly – aside from the missing display unit.
What’s next? The user himself explained that he would likely sell the device and buy a new display unit for it. You can find the device used for at least 1,200 euros or more. Therefore, the owner is likely to make a big profit if he manages to repair and sell it.
Used hardware can be a good alternative
Used hardware can be worthwhile: If you want to upgrade your system, it can definitely pay off to look for used hardware. Because you usually get this cheaper than if you buy the items new. The biggest disadvantage is often the lack of warranty from the manufacturer.
However, some sellers also offer used hardware with a receipt, so you also have warranty in case you need it.
Nevertheless, you should be a bit careful, as in the past Chinese miners flooded the market with cheap high-end graphics cards. Here you could only speculate about the wear and tear of the used hardware. Depending on the professionalism of the miners, you could also end up with very worn-out graphics cards. One manufacturer even warned against buying these used graphics cards and referred to a performance loss with mining GPUs.
