Horror scenario at Funcom: A lot of user data fell into the hands of hackers.
Thousands of forum accounts from Funcom compromised
At the creators of The Secret World and Age of Conan, there was a major issue with equally large consequences over the past weekend. As Funcom reports, there was a complication in the forum software that allowed hackers to read all user data from the forum accounts. This includes account names, email addresses, and passwords of the respective forum accounts. The affected websites are:
- TheSecretWorld.com
- AgeofConan.com
- Anarchy-Online.com
- LongestJourney.com
Although this only involves the forum accounts and not the actual game accounts, Funcom urges all players to change their game account passwords as well, especially if they have used the same password for both the forum and the game.
As an immediate measure, Funcom has reset all passwords for the forum accounts. Those logging in to the forums next time will receive the message that the current password is no longer valid and a new one must be created.
According to Funcom, they take “the situation very seriously and are taking steps to ensure this does not happen again.” The error that allowed this hacking opportunity has been found. The forums are temporarily offline so that Funcom can search the system for further issues before normal operations are restored.
