2024 will see many changes in League of Legends. There will be item changes again, and the map is also changing after a long time. The director of LoL, Pu Liu, has now spoken on Twitter about the future and promises great things for the year 2025.
The 13th season of League of Legends is coming to an end, and Season 14 will start in early January with many changes, including a major change for the map and the current item system. On Twitter, LoL director Pu Liu addressed the future of the game.
In his tweet, he mentions 10 points that concern the future and the relationship with players. The most important of these would be these 3:
Fun over fairness, change over inertia, journey over destination.
We need to set the priorities for our game’s roadmap in a way that players can feel it.
2024 will have something for everyone. 2025 will change League forever.

The other points can be described with a focus on the player and their opinions. They want to offer players more, surprise them more, regardless of what type of player they are or how well they have already mastered the game.
A focus on players and fun
Reading through these points, one notices a focus on the game itself. Pu Liu is not talking about esports and the scene behind it, which even broke a record this year with Worlds 2023. One possibility could be more in-game events or new modes like Soul Fighter and Arena.
If you look at the latest champions, you can see with Briar, Naafiri, and Milio that even the purely mechanical complexity of the champions has changed compared to KSante, Bel’Veth, and Renata. Recently, Hwei was introduced with 10 skills, while the other new champions of 2023 were unusually tame. They are not blunt in their roles and mechanics in the game themselves and remain complex, but mechanically easy to learn.
The arena mode was a pleasant surprise this year, and after many fan requests, it returned this month. More of such new
game modes, aside from the competitive thought, would make many casual players of the game happy.
These are all just speculations, as the 10 points from Pu Liu are quite vaguely formulated; he does not specify what he exactly means by the changes and the focus on fun. Also, why League should significantly change in 2025 remains open.
