With Friday the 13th: The Game, the current developer is stepping down. The team is moving on to new projects after a legal dispute. The slasher was incredibly successful just a year ago.
The developer IllFonic is stopping the development of Friday the 13th: The Game. The publisher Gun Media has announced that IllFonic has completed all “contractual work” and will focus on other projects in the future.
Developer may not create new content: A few weeks ago, we reported that IllFonic is not allowed to develop new content for Friday the 13th: The Game. The reason is a legal dispute in which the creator of the original work is attempting to reclaim the rights to his works – and consequently to everything that has developed from it, such as a PC game.
As a result, the work on new content has been put on hold. This is not sustainable for a development studio. Therefore, they are now completely moving on from it.
Bug fixes will continue: However, the project will not be completely buried. Even though there will be no new content, the teams from Black Tower Games and Gun Media will take over support for the slasher.
They will continue to handle bug fixes and balancing changes.
Uncertain future: Whether and how new content for Friday the 13th: The Game will be available in the future is still uncertain. The legal dispute must be resolved first, and that could take a while.
It remains to be seen whether anyone will be willing to continue developing a game that has been “lying fallow” for several months.
The Summer Hit of 2017
A phenomenon last year: This is a strange fate for a game that was still considered an absolute surprise hit in the summer of 2017. At that time, Friday the 13th was booming on Twitch.
The launch of the actually small indie project caused the servers to melt down back then. Streamers and their viewers loved the clunky mix, in which a killer pursues some campers.

But a year later, the hype seems to have almost completely faded. During the peak phase in May 2017, there were still 7683 players per hour, but now it has fallen to 321, according to the Githyp page. The numbers refer to the Steam version.
Will you continue to play Friday the 13th: The Game? Or has the game become completely boring without new content, and would you rather turn to Dead by Daylight with dismembered killer women?
