With the latest update, free-to-play players can finally get better access to legendary gems in Diablo Immortal. Some have now saved their crests to buy a moment of luck in portals, but were bitterly disappointed.
What kind of experience is this? The core of Diablo Immortal is looting and leveling, as in every part of the series. However, in Immortal, loot is often hidden behind certain loot limits. The exception here are legendary gems.
Legendary gems can be obtained for free, but only limited or with a lot of luck – or you have to pay for them. Because by using legendary crests, which can be found in the shop, the desired gems are guaranteed to drop in elder portals.
Why is this coming up now? Since the update 1.5.2 on July 20, free-to-play players can collect significantly more legendary crests. Some of them are now saving 10 pieces – the maximum for an elder portal – for a real “lootplosion” in a portal.
However, this has only recently been possible without paying. You can now get 10 legendary crests for free this month through the new events, tasks, and the proper use of dwindling sparks.
Therefore, the first reports from players are emerging in the community, who have attempted portals with 10 legendary crests. However, most of them are rather disillusioned and disappointed.

What players show: On reddit, there are several threads from players who have completed their first “10 crest” runs, meaning they have guaranteed received 10 legendary gems. The crux of the matter is: The really good gems with a rating of ?/5 stars are not guaranteed.
Players with particularly bad luck are showing their screenshots of 10 disappointing 1-star gems (via reddit). Others have at least a bit more luck and can call legendary gems with 2 or even 2/5 stars their own:
Additionally, there are posts from players who actually received 5/5 gems – however, we cannot confirm whether this happened purely free-to-play.
The reactions to the posts are often cynical, sometimes bitter. One user sarcastically replies: “Wow!! 10 gem power for 25 dollars!”. Another one explains why saving is not worth it at all:

Is it really not worth it? Whether you finish 10 portals with one crest or one with 10 crests should not make a difference regarding the odds of obtaining good gems. Only the feeling of a “lootplosion” is higher during a 10 crest run.
But if you’re on the hunt for the best legendary gem, you can simply use the crests and finish the portals. You can even sell the gems for platinum on the marketplace.
By the way, it’s quite possible that one or two players have found their perfect 5/5 gem and simply don’t use reddit but enjoy it quietly. If you are among the lucky ones, feel free to let us know in the comments.
