The MMORPG Black Desert Online (PC) has now been on the market in the West for 2 years. To celebrate the anniversary, you can test the sandbox MMORPG for free. But what kind of game is Black Desert and is it worth it for you?
Black Desert Online was released in March 2016 from South Korea in this country and in the USA. Since then, the sandbox MMORPG has evolved significantly. Today, Black Desert Online is even more popular in the West than in Asia!
So what is Black Desert and why should you play it?
Black Desert Online, the great beautiful MMORPG sandbox!
Black Desert Online is a large, complex, and beautiful sandbox MMORPG. Unlike World of Warcraft, SWTOR, or Guild Wars 2, you don’t grind through various areas linearly and follow a storyline that leads you straight to the endgame with elite dungeons and raids.
Such things don’t exist in Black Desert.
You do follow a story, but it’s barely worth mentioning. Also, you will search in vain for raids and dungeons. Instead, you can unleash yourself in PvP, grind resources or experience points, and write your own very personal stories in roleplay.
The gaming experience arises from your own goals. For example, you set out to finally find a horse. Then you start and google what you need: sugar and a lasso. And before you know it, you’re knee-deep in farming in Black Desert and have to deal with brewing beer because you’ve somehow started to build an economy chain, and the workers insist on drinking beer to do their job.
Grinding and farming with fun
But besides crafting and exploring the sandbox, Black also offers classic PvE – beating monsters.

However, unlike most MMORPGs, there is no classic level cap in Black Desert Online. So it’s not over at some point. Instead, you level up quickly to about level 50, then it becomes a slow grind to level 56, and after that, it gets brutal. From level 60 onward, grinding for new levels becomes almost inhumanly tough.
Therefore, the first player in the West reached level 63 only in December 2017! The grind is indeed very strong in this game!
But thanks to the action-packed and well-thought-out combat system, grinding and farming is a lot of fun. Each of the 15 classes masters numerous skills and combos.
New weapons and skills for the “endgame”
Also, starting from level 56, you can equip a special new “Awakening weapon” that unlocks new possibilities depending on your character. For instance, the ranger turns into a melee fighter or the tanky warrior with the two-handed sword suddenly becomes a DPS class.
Recently, there are also ways to use the old weapons and skills meaningfully. With the new absolute skills, you have strong versions of regular abilities and the skill fusion “Rabam’s Enlightenment” allows you to create a new combo ability from two old skills.
Trade and crafting
As a sandbox MMORPG, Black Desert Online offers you a lot of activities outside of combat. You can rent houses and production facilities like workshops and farms all over the world. Your workers will then toil away and produce goods or items.
You can then load the stuff onto your donkey cart and make a fat profit at remote locations around the world. Like in other sandboxes like EVE Online or ArcheAge, the economy is optimally in players’ hands.
Also cool: There are tons of life skills. These are skills that meaningfully enrich the game. This includes fishing, milking cows, and breeding horses.
PvP is important
If you don’t like grinding, you can let loose in PvP. There, guilds can engage in wars against other player groups and besiege fortresses. If you don’t belong to a guild, you can temporarily join one of the two sides as a militia.
For duel fans, there is an arena where PvP tournaments are held.
The most beautiful MMORPG on the market
A major feature of Black Desert Online has always been the excellent graphics. The game is one of the most beautiful MMORPGs available. It all starts in the editor, where you can spend hours until you have your dream hero. Only a gender and race lock prevents you from trying everything.
In the game itself, the graphics are no less impressive than in the editor. There are beautiful landscapes, picturesque marine areas, weather effects, and atmospheric day/night transitions. Black Desert is still a visual treat!
Is Black Desert right for me?
Black Desert Online is a complex game that has many aspects and does not necessarily appeal to every type of player equally. Therefore, we have summarized the pros and cons of the game for you here.
Black Desert is the right game for you if you…
- want to enjoy breathtaking graphics
- have fun creating characters in the editor for hours

- want to immerse yourself in roleplay
- like economic and trading simulations
- want to have fun with housing, crafting, and life skills

- cannot stand hours of grinding and farming
- want simple and intuitive gameplay. Black Desert is very complex!
- are fans of theme park MMOs with endgame raids and dungeons
