Game of Thrones: Kingsroad will be released for free on Steam in a few weeks. However, players are warning about the many microtransactions. Some players state: It’s astonishing how many microtransactions can be packed into a simple game.
What kind of game is this? Game of Thrones: Kingsroad was released in March 2025 as a game for around 25 euros on Steam. The game promises, according to developers, a “narrative action-adventure RPG of blockbuster quality that brings the world of Westeros to life with exceptional detail and unprecedented scale.”
After about two months, the game is now officially coming to Steam and will also be free. However, the reviews on Steam are only “Mixed” (63% positive) with around 1,000 reviews. This is mainly due to the strong monetization that resembles mobile titles.
Many contents hidden behind microtransactions and a paywall
What is the problem? Players report that Kingsroad relies on a specific currency that you need to obtain loot or progress in the story at all. Players warn that all essential content like important fights or bosses is hidden behind a paywall (via steampowered.com):

Progress is heavily controlled by BP, points that you have to spend to receive loot from missions, bosses, etc. No more BP? No problem – 10 $ and you’re good to go – for today. No BP tomorrow – no problem – just pay again – and again – and again. And if you think you have enough for the rest of the storyline, you’ll be surprised. Do you need 38,000 points for the storyline? You guessed it, we’re screwing you again and you need 48,000 for the boss. Where do you get the points? Check out the shop – 50 $ here … 50 $ there and you can face the boss, which is basically a PAYWALL.
Additionally, there are a total of 14 different currencies in the game and two battle passes that you can buy if you want to progress. The colleagues at GameStar (Paywall) also explain that the game misses a lot of potential due to the greedy microtransactions.
Some players also accuse the game that even the official release can’t save much anymore (via steamcommunity.com): There have been no major updates in the past few weeks, and by now, most content has been played through. Currently, only about 200 players are still playing Kingsroad (via steamdb.info).
