Foxhole has probably barely been on anyone’s radar so far, but it is quite an interesting online game: A “massive” war MMO in a persistent game world.
Foxhole places you as a soldier in a fictional, persistent game world where a war rages, reminiscent of World War II. You decide which side you want to join and participate in large battles. You are therefore a soldier in a huge army.
It is played from an isometric perspective. You control your hero from above. This gives you the necessary overview to keep a good eye on your surroundings. As a soldier, you have relatively free rein in how you proceed in the game world.

Become part of the war
You join groups from your faction to establish defensive lines that you then have to hold while player groups from the opposing faction try to break through these defensive lines.
Or you charge forward as part of a large army and try to capture important strongholds of your enemies to gain control over the game area. Logistics play an important role. To do this, you drive trucks with important goods like ammunition and resources to specific locations on the map, but you need to be careful not to fall into an ambush.
Tactics matter
Your approach should always be well-coordinated and well-planned. Because in battles, you need to act tactically to secure victory. The battles change based on the victories or defeats you achieve. The war continues, even when you log out. You must wisely utilize the terrain and times of day as well as vehicles like tanks and always be vigilant as your enemies do not sleep.
Every character in Foxhole is another player – there are no NPCs. Your hero can also improve over time.

A “massive” war MMO
Foxhole is an MMO where hundreds of players meet in battles. The game world is divided into six regions, and the game itself offers three modes.
- The so-called “server game” takes place in one region where 120 players meet. If the war is won, the server restarts.
- The “campaign game” offers six regions that must be conquered consecutively.
- “World Conquest”, on the other hand, connects these six regions into a large game world, allowing more than 500 players to participate in a game. At a later date, the player count is expected to increase significantly.
Battles in a persistent game world
You act as a soldier from an army in the persistent world, meaning you do not control multiple units of soldiers or vehicles like in RTS games. Persistent means that the game world exists as long as the war lasts and changes over time. Your character remains in this world – even when you log out.
The battles have significant impacts on the regions. Areas are captured, defensive lines broken… All of this requires flexibility, as you must constantly adapt to changing situations.
You control all elements of the war. This starts with weapon production, builds up bases, and includes tactical battles.
Foxhole is currently in an early access phase and can be played on Steam.
Andreas says:
Foxhole offers a very interesting gameplay concept. A dynamic war in a persistent world. Each character is another player. You are therefore just one soldier in a large army. Together, you plan the next steps, devise new strategies, build bases and defensive lines, and try to conquer area by area. The game world exists as long as it changes and evolves with the war until it is won. Foxhole is an MMO that is also interesting for anyone who enjoys online tactical games in a changing, persistent game world.
