In Fortnite, the World Cup is starting with prize money of $30 million. However, one of the best players in the world is worried beforehand: Fortnite is simply too unstable. The qualification and the World Cup will be played across three different Seasons.
Who is speaking? In the stream, Dennis “Cloak” Lepore is speaking. He is one of the best Fortnite duo players in the world. Together with his partner Tfue, he won the big Fall Skirmish in October 2018 of Fortnite.
For the victory alone, Cloak received over $250,000 in prize money with all bonuses back then. He knows his stuff.
The World Cup will be played with 3 different Seasons
What is the problem? Cloak explains how difficult the World Cup in Fortnite will be, as it will be held over 3 different Seasons:
- The first three weeks of qualification would be played with the current, totally broken meta of Season 8 – players would misuse hamster balls to climb up
- After that, there would be 10 weeks of qualification with the next Season 9. Everything will surely change again with a new meta, new map, and mobility items
- And the actual World Championship will then be played with Season 10: So with a completely different Season than in the qualification – it will all change again
This is the problem: According to Cloak, it is impossible to prepare for the World Cup or to train anything in this way.
Now, the World Cup involves insane sums, but the problems are still present.

What’s behind this: In Fortnite, the Season changes every 10 weeks and brings major changes: A tournament that lasts 4 months is a problem.
In other games, you agree on a patch version and a tournament is played with that. Additionally, in e-sport titles like League of Legends, the changes from patch to patch are significantly less than in Fortnite.
In Fortnite, Epic actually patches massive changes in just hours before a major tournament, like now with the “respawn vans.” They will arrive in the same week that the qualification for the World Cup starts.
Furthermore, for professionals, switching to a different screen resolution is already a change in their routine. .
What’s going on with Fortnite and e-sport? Fortnite seems not to have resolved some fundamental issues in e-sport, yet has a lot of money to distribute. That’s a problem that professional players have been struggling with for a long time.
Epic apparently did not design Fortnite: Battle Royale as an e-sport, but rather as a casual game, until they were surprised by their own success.
The demand for e-sport was huge. You could see this just by the fact that e-sport organizations were already forming teams for Fortnite before Epic even presented a plan for e-sport in Fortnite.
