Fortnite is indeed coming to Android devices. But only 12 percent of all mobile phones and tablets circulating worldwide will be able to handle the game. This is stated by Epic’s CEO, Tim Sweeney. Which phones will run Fortnite and which Android smartphones will not?
What is the announcement? Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney stated in an interview with Gamesbeat that there are approximately 2.5 billion Android devices in the world. Only about 300 million will run Fortnite “well”.
This means that 88% of the Android devices that exist in the world will not play Fortnite “well”.
Fortnite Android only for “High-End” devices
What is the reason for that? Sweeney mentions that there is a significant range of devices on Android. From the $30 smartphone that can be bought in India to the $1000 premium phone.
On which phones should Fortnite Android run? Sweeney says Fortnite will run on “High-End” Android devices. By that, he means devices that are up to three years old and have a high-quality GPU.
A specific list of devices that can run Fortnite Android is not provided by Sweeney.

No Fortnite in the Google Play Store: It is officially known that there will be Fortnite available only through a direct APK download from the Fortnite site. The game will not appear in the Google Play Store.
No statement yet on Samsung exclusivity deal
No word on the Samsung exclusivity deal: Currently, there are 4 rumors surrounding Samsung and Fortnite. It is said:
- Fortnite could exclusively appear on Android for 30 days for a €1000 smartphone from Samsung, namely the Samsung Galaxy Note 9.
- A second rumor states: After that, there should be a further exclusivity period for other Samsung smartphones. This will last several months
- Additionally, Fortnite is supposed to be pre-installed on the Samsung smartphone
- and there are reportedly 15,000 V-Bucks as a bonus.
There is currently no official statement on any of these rumors.
It could therefore be the case that far more than 88% of the devices will not be able to run Fortnite Android at launch. But that is not clear at the moment.
When will there be exact information about the release on Android? We expect that on August 9, there will be further details on this rumor and the release of Fortnite on Android. Then the event “Samsung Unpacked” will take place.
