On December 29, there were major issues in Fortnite. The servers were down for about 5 hours – many players could not play one evening between Christmas and New Year. Scandal! Demands for “compensation” quickly emerged, with players even demanding rare skins or V-Bucks as restitution. In fact, it seems that there will be some kind of compensation for the downtime in 2022.
What was going on in Fortnite?
- On 12/29 around 5:13 PM our time, there were connection issues with Fortnite. Long queues formed, and players couldn’t smoothly get into the game.
- Starting at 7:13 PM our time, nothing worked anymore. The servers were down, and Fortnite couldn’t be played at all.
- The problem lasted until around 0:30 AM, after which the issue was resolved.
Epic Games plans to explain Fortnite issues in 2022
What caused it? That is still unknown. Epic Games only reported: “The Fortnite game servers are back, and you can continue celebrating the Winterfest.”
It is said that they will provide information in 2022 and explain how they plan to ensure that this does not happen again.
Epic Games will help to “make up for lost time”
Is there a compensation? Epic Games says: “We will let you know what we will do to help you make up for lost time.”
It sounds like Epic Games wants to give players something, but it might be more like bonus EXP or progress in the Battle Pass than what they desire.
Players demand V-Bucks or extremely rare skins as compensation
What do players want? The biggest demand is clearly for “V-Bucks,” which is the in-game currency that players can use to purchase all sorts of cosmetics they want.
There are also requests for certain extremely valuable skins that were available in Fortnite years ago, but hardly anyone has: Like the Renegade Raider, the reward skin for Season 1.
What was there in the past? In the past, in 2018, it was the case that players received “Battle Pass Stars” as compensation for server downtime, which was more like a “purpose-bound compensation.”
There was also a time when all players were given a single specific cosmetic item as compensation for downtime, such as a “Back Bling.” Everyone then had that.
It will be interesting to see how Epic Games will compensate players this time for not being able to play Fortnite for 5 hours. It doesn’t look like it will be V-Bucks.
But in the past, a lot was different in Fortnite:
The original players of Fortnite are really pissed off right now – and rightly so.
