Some players of Fortnite: Battle Royale (PC, PS4, iOS, Switch & Xbox One) have recently been upset with Sony. Once the Fortnite account is registered on the PS4, it cannot be used on the Switch anymore. However, Sony now offers hope for a solution.
The Crossplay Dilemma: Sony refuses crossplay on the PlayStation 4 when it comes to the Switch or Xbox One. You cannot play Fortnite or other games with these platforms together.
It’s particularly bad on the Switch, as your account is blocked if you have registered it on the PS4. Currently, you can only play on the Switch with a new Fortnite account, without your achievements and purchased skins acquired on the PS4.
Sony is confident in finding a solution
Finally some hope: After Sony initially ignored the problem and then caused even more trouble with a press release, there are now more conciliatory tones. In an interview with Eurogamer, Shawn Layden, CEO of Sony Interactive America, spoke about crossplay and Fortnite:
We are looking at a lot of possibilities. You can imagine that the surrounding circumstances will affect more than just one game. However, we are confident that we will find a solution that is accepted and understood by the gamer community while simultaneously supporting our business.
What could Sony do?
No concrete solution proposal yet: What exactly Sony is considering is not known. However, there are several possibilities, including:
- Allow crossplay completely
- Continue to prohibit crossplay but lift the block to Nintendo
- Allow crossplay but not permit “cross-purchase.” According to an insider, the idea of buying items on another console and then playing them on the PS4 was the main reason against crossplay at Sony.
