For a few hours now, Fortnite has been completely offline. Epic had to shut down the servers due to an emergency; players are therefore having trouble logging into Fortnite. They are reporting the error Fortnite as-1041. What happened? When will the servers be back up?
Want to play a round of Fortnite: Battle Royale before work? Unfortunately, that seems to be out of the question today. As Epic announced a few hours ago via Twitter and Reddit, an unscheduled maintenance break must be taken.
This has been ongoing for several hours now – and there is currently no end in sight.
Critical Database Error in Login and Account System
It all started with some login issues last night. Due to a database error in the login and account system, the login and matchmaking were blocked.
To stabilize the system at least temporarily, Epic limited the traffic and introduced queues. Unfortunately, this “workaround” proved to be unstable, which is why they were forced into an emergency maintenance.
The maintenance has been going on since around 5 AM German time – and there is still no end in sight. It is worth noting that the login is not only disabled in Fortnite, but you cannot log in on the Epic website either.
Whether yesterday’s patch 3.5.0 has anything to do with the current problems is not known. Epic has had technical issues after major patches in the past as well, which is not unusual for a title with such a large player base and an early access status.
When will Fortnite be back online on PC, PS4, and Xbox One?
Update 11:34 AM: Even now, there’s still nothing new from Fortnite. Epic seems to have serious problems. They are still working on the database, and Fortnite remains offline.
Update 15:15 PM: Hours later, there’s still nothing new. Epic is only stating via Twitter that they are working on resolving the issues. There is no timeline for when Fortnite will be back online.
Statement from Epic: Worked through the night to get Fortnite back online
Update 17:00 PM: Epic has updated again. The technicians have worked through the night, but still cannot provide reassurance. A critical error has occurred in the Fortnite database. This results in issues with matchmaking and logging in. Epic cannot yet provide a timeline for when Fortnite will be up and running again, but they will provide updates every hour.
Update 19:06: New statement. The system should gradually recover in the coming hours. However, players on PS4 will still have login issues in Fortnite for a longer time. Epic apologizes again and will provide an update in about an hour.
Update 19:58 PM: Epic reports – things are moving forward. They see progress across all platforms.
