In the online shooter Fortnite: Save the World a big change is coming: The V-Buck Llamas will now show what they contain. This is intended to avoid frustration. The new X-Ray Llamas are expected to go live soon.
This is how it is at the moment: Players can buy various types of loot boxes in Fortnite: Save the World. They are called “Llamas” in the game.
Players obtain these loot boxes via V-Bucks, which can either be earned in “Save the World” or players can go to the cash shop and buy V-Bucks for real money.
Llamas are typical loot boxes that contain items from Fortnite that are important for progressing in Save the World: weapons, heroes, schematics, traps, and currency.
You only find out what’s inside a Llama once you have already purchased it and the thing cracks open. It’s a kind of gamble.
One can spend a lot of money: For example, a player paid $1500 to receive the wrong mythic hero. Frustration is guaranteed.
This is how it will be with the next update: Most things will stay the same – only the Llamas will show exactly what they contain beforehand.
Even with “Upgrade Llamas” players should know beforehand what is inside. These Llamas had the chance to contain more than usual in some cases.
The Llamas will become “X-Ray Llamas” and players will know exactly what they are purchasing:
- So if they see a Llama that doesn’t suit them, they simply don’t buy it and wait a day for a new Llama to be available.
- If they like the offer of the Llama, they can seize it and buy it.
With the change, it will no longer be possible to buy multiple Llamas at once, but only one Llama at a time. Mini Llamas and Event Llamas cannot be purchased; they will continue to function as before.
At the launch of the update, Epic will gift everyone 5 free tokens for Upgrade Llamas to test the system.
When will the change come? The change will come with update 7.30. The patch is likely to go live on Tuesday, January 29, unless something unexpected happens.
Was there such an idea before? In the Netherlands, there was something similar in DOTA 2 since 2018: there, players could look into loot boxes before purchasing them. Valve reacted to political pressure.
However, there was a catch: The contents of the loot box did not change, they remained the same. Players had to buy a “bad loot box,” hoping that the next one would have better contents.
Fortnite seems to be different. The contents of the Llamas change when the daily shop is restocked: every 24 hours. So, players are not forced to buy a “weak Llama” to have a chance at a “strong Llama.”
The idea in the form of Fortnite is indeed new.
This is what it’s about: This is a drastic change that fundamentally alters the concept of loot boxes. It is a player-friendly change.
Epic apparently wants to set a signal here.
It won’t hurt Fortnite: Save the World too much. The game has been quiet in recent months and the huge revenues from Fortnite are surely coming from the skins of “Fortnite Battle Royale.”
But this is a change that will definitely cause waves, and other publishers might be asked: “Hey, why aren’t you doing this?”
