Fortnite: Battle Royale features a new Battle Pass in Chapter 2, Season 8 with a supposedly more flexible selection system. However, according to many fans, this is just an illusion of choice, as the example of the crazy new unicorn skin shows.
How does the new Battle Pass work? In Fortnite Chapter 2, Season 8, there is once again a Battle Pass. The new Battle Pass works similarly to the previous season.
Instead of grinding through 100 levels in the Pass as before, you can to a certain extent choose when you want to receive which rewards.
For each level progression in the Pass, you receive 5 points that you can spend on certain things.
What is the intended benefit? According to the developers, this system is supposed to loosen up the progress in the Pass and give players more freedom with their rewards. However, as enticing as the system appears in theory, it proves to be quite frustrating in reality. At least many fans see it that way right now.
“I just want to buy the unicorn!”
What bothers the players? The problem that many players currently have with the Pass is that it practically represents only the illusion of free choice. In a large discussion on reddit (1.3K upvotes and 246 comments, as of September 16, 2021), players express frustration over having to grind quite a bit just to get the particularly cool skins.
What kind of skin is that anyway? The skin that many players in Fortnite desperately want is the fabulous pink unicorn Fabio Sparklemane. This strange creature can only be found on page 5 of the Pass.
This page is initially locked until you purchase a color variant of the skin Kor. However, you can only obtain Kor after unlocking all rewards on page four. And to get to page four, other grinds are necessary.
For Fabio to finally move into your locker, you must also unlock all rewards from page 5. Additionally, there are other variants for Fabio that can be found on other pages of the Battle Pass.
So, anyone wanting Fabio must put in a significant effort and cannot unlock the Sparklemane immediately after a few levels, which is something many fans actually hoped for from the new system of the Pass.
As a result, this frustrates the fans and on reddit, many are wishing for the old system to come back:

- AliWaz77: “This whole ‘choose your rewards in the order you want them’ is only good for the little cosmetics you want immediately. But there’s no way to skip the order in which you get certain skins.”
- sPectreLovesXbox: “Epic should just make all rewards available at any time except for the Tier 100 items. You should have to unlock everything else first just for the Tier 100 items.”
