In Fortnite: Battle Royale, tournaments are no longer just closed events. Now everyone can play competitively at certain times. Learn here how it works.
What are the new tournaments? The public tournaments in Fortnite are called “events”. You can find them in the same-named tab in the main menu of Fortnite. Anyone who is online during the specified time and plays matches there can participate in events.
So they are not exclusive competitions like the Fall Skirmish. Epic wants to give total newcomers the chance to compete in competitions.
All details about the tournaments
What tournaments are there? To start, Epic has announced five tournaments.
- Alpha Tournament: Solo, runs from October 16 to 21
- Friday Night Fortnite: Squad, runs from October 19 to November 30 (every Friday)
- Beta Tournament: Duo, runs from October 23 to 25
- Salty Springs Cup: Solo, runs from October 27 to 31
- Tomato Temple Cup: Duo, runs from October 28 to November 1
How can I participate? Participation is open to anyone who plays during the event time. The exact times of the tournaments are listed in each event in the game.
What can be won? So far, all tournaments offer a certain reward that you can earn. To do so, you need to earn points.
How to earn points: Points can be earned for a certain number of kills in a match, for especially good placements, and for epic victories.
The amount of points awarded for different actions varies from tournament to tournament. If you manage to gather enough points (usually 20 to 25) during the tournament time frame, you receive the reward.
What special features are there? The tournaments have a special property. You play in crossplay with all other players on their respective platforms. You may encounter PC players with mouse and keyboard, console players with gamepads, and even mobile gamers with touchscreens.
The reason is that Epic has seen in previous tournaments that really good players can perform well with any control scheme. Therefore, at the beginning, they want to allow everyone to compete with their favorite device. This way, everyone can compete with their friends, no matter where and with what controls they play.
However, there may be tournaments later only for specific platforms.
