In Fortnite you can now get a new emote that you know from the platform TikTok. Epic and TikTok are entering a collaboration that aligns perfectly with current events.
This is now available in Fortnite: The emote is called Rollie and features a dance that has become popular on the TikTok platform. The dance is actually meant to accompany the song “Rolex” by Ayo and Teo, but now you can also use it in Battle Royale.
The dance originated on TikTok, and thousands of users replicated the movements. The emote in Fortnite now shows that Epic and TikTok are collaborating. Both platforms are currently involved in a legal dispute, which makes such a collaboration even more fitting.
Cooperation after dispute with Apple and Donald Trump
This is the situation for both companies: Both Epic and TikTok are currently in a crisis:
- Epic has clashed with Apple, and Fortnite is no longer available in the iOS App Store.
- TikTok is in conflict with US President Donald Trump – who wants to ban the app in the US due to concerns over the privacy of his citizens.
There have been better times for Fortnite and TikTok, and this collaboration fits perfectly now.
This is how it has been so far with TikTok and Fortnite: This is not the first emote that Epic has taken from TikTok. Already in January 2020, Fortnite held an “Emote Royale”. Fans were allowed to create and upload their own dance on TikTok. The best dance was then immortalized in an emote in Fortnite.
There have also been other emotes inspired by TikTok since then. Now it is just another collaboration that fits perfectly during these challenging times for Epic and TikTok.
What could be next for the companies? TikTok has a difficult future, at least in the US. There, Donald Trump is taking strong actions against the platform and wants to ban it. Other companies are now suggesting that they can host the platform and thus protect user data. Trump reportedly approved the deal according to Tagesschau, and it seems that TikTok can continue to exist in the US.
Fortnite does not have a bright future on the Apple platform. Currently, iPhone users cannot access the Fortnite app. The “Save the World” mode will die on Mac, as Epic cannot upload updates there anymore. Currently, there is no solution in sight.
