Streamer Tyler “Ninja” Blevins receives a special honor for his work on Twitch and as a content creator for Fortnite at the end of 2018. He wins the award for “Content Creator 2018” at the Video Game Awards.
This is the award Ninja won: The Video Game Awards are somewhat like the “Oscars of Video Games” and are awarded annually.
The award for the best “Content Creator” was new this year. In previous years, the award was known as “Trending Gamer.” It is a people’s choice award.
Who else was nominated?
The field was full of Fortnite streamers. The nominees were:
- Dr. Lupo, also a Fortnite streamer and a good friend and partner of Ninja
- Myth, a Fortnite esports player and streamer
- Pokimane, a well-known Fortnite streamer
- Willyrex, a Spanish-speaking star on YouTube
Since January 2018, Fortnite and Ninja have taken off
This is how Ninja’s career developed in 2018: The career and rise of Ninja can be impressively seen in the curve of his followers and views on Socialblade. Ninja has been streaming for a long time but gained followers over the years only in the “normal range.” It was a steady, but rather small increase in viewers.
With the rise of Fortnite starting in January 2018, this changed:
Ninja gained:
- over 500,000 followers on Twitch in January 2018
- one million in February
- 2.3 million in March. This was also the time when Ninja streamed with rapper Drake. That moment is considered Ninja’s breakthrough. Fortnite had finally arrived in the mainstream.
In August 2018, Ninja became the first streamer on Twitch to have more than 10 million followers – thanks to Fortnite.
Who won the award before Ninja? Although the award is new in this form, “Content Creators” were nominated and honored in previous years, meaning streamers, YouTubers, or even people who wrote for a gaming site if they had a strong video connection.
Ninja’s predecessors were:
- 2014 TotalBiscuit
- 2015 Greg Miller from KindaFunny
- 2016 Boogie2988
- 2017 Guy Beahm (“Dr Disrespect”)
Ninja says about the award: When he accepted the award, he thanked his wife and family, who always let him play video games. It has been a fantastic year for video games.
On Twitter, Ninja wrote: “Words cannot describe how I feel right now. Everything that has been achieved this year, and incredible things are still happening with amazing people. Thank you all… And thank you to the Video Game Awards for this award.”
This is how the awards ceremony went: Ninja appeared at the awards ceremony with his wife and manager. The two posed on Twitter in front of the awards. We embedded the couple’s photo at the beginning of our article.
At the awards ceremony, Ninja then had a dialogue with the Muppet character “Pepe,” a Mexican shrimp. The two discussed whether it’s called “Fork Knife” or “Fortnite” and took numerous selfies.
