It was discovered in Fortnite: Battle Royale several months ago by dataminers in the game files, and now it is actually coming: the P90 submachine gun. How will the new weapon play in Fortnite? Will it be the new “Must Have”?
Recently, the submachine gun was revamped and thrown back into battle. The comeback of the SMG was spectacular, as submachine guns quickly became one of the most popular close combat weapons in Fortnite.
Even more submachine guns: Removing the tactical submachine gun from the game was a comprehensible step. After all, several representatives of this weapon category are already present in the game. However, that does not stop Epic from expanding the arsenal: The P90 is coming and could rise to the top among submachine guns.
The new P90 – reality as an inspiration?
A real-life counterpart is a powerful weapon: The P90 submachine gun exists in the real world. The Belgian FN P90 has frequently served as a model for similarly named weapons in various games. It was considered one of the best weapons in Jagged Alliance.
If Fortnite: Battle Royale takes inspiration from the real-world model for the P90, we can expect a very powerful weapon.
With a fire rate of 900 rounds per minute and a (for Fortnite standards) large magazine of 50 rounds, the new P90 could send any opponent back to the lobby in no time.
What might the P90 look like in Fortnite?
Will the new P90 destroy game balance? That is unlikely. Epic has shown in the past that they have a good understanding of balance, setting aside the double pump issue.
The P90 is expected to be very strong, even at epic and legendary quality levels. However, its high fire rate and large magazine will likely require some form of trade-off. Epic could achieve this through
- an earlier onset of damage drop-off (effective range)
- lower damage per shot, or
- a very rare distribution of the weapon in the game world
What rarity will the new P90 submachine gun come in? Most likely, the submachine gun will be found at epic (purple) and legendary (orange) quality levels.
Where will you be able to find the P90? Similar to other weapons, you will primarily be able to find the P90 in supply drops. However, it will also be available as loot on the ground or in treasure chests.
When will the P90 come to Fortnite? Most likely already on Tuesday afternoon: on July 24th around noon.
Why is Fortnite bringing so many new submachine guns?
What is the reason for Epic’s submachine gun offensive? The dominance of shotguns is to be broken. This is evident from the actions of the past weeks. After the introduction of the really powerful new submachine gun, now another legendary representative is coming to the game world.
It can already be observed in practice: the use of pump shotguns has decreased significantly. A combination of shotgun and submachine gun is now considered the best combination for close combat.
