Fortnite: Battle Royale is a bigger competitor to the streaming service Netflix than other streaming providers. This is due to the screentime that Epic’s game claims worldwide.
Therefore, Netflix must compete with Fortnite: In an annual report, Netflix stated among other things that it has more competition from Fortnite than from the competing streaming service HBO or Amazon Prime.
This is mainly because here the competition is not just about the same offerings, in the case of Netflix, Amazon, and HBO that would be movies. Rather, the competition is primarily about the time of viewers in front of the screen.
Fortnite has more players than Netflix subscribers
According to Netflix, it is essential for streaming services to captivate viewers in front of the screen. Therefore, viewer numbers at Netflix also rose massively when YouTube briefly went offline for a few minutes in October 2018.
In the USA, Netflix dominates about 10 percent of the screentime. Overall, they have over 139 million subscribers. Fortnite, however, boasts over 200 million players! Therefore, many potential Netflix customers spend a lot of time in front of the screen playing Epic’s battle royale game.
User screentime is, according to Netflix, the most important metric for digital offerings. So they primarily compete for the time of users. And thanks to the always-available digital content, users can better manage their leisure time and always choose from a wide range of offerings.
That’s why 2019 will be a tough year for streaming providers: Due to the tough competition for viewer time, 2019 will likely bring even harsher competition among streaming service providers.
Because in addition to Netflix, HBO, and Amazon Prime, Disney’s new streaming service is also set to launch with an exclusive Star Wars series, and Fortnite will certainly not become smaller.
However, Netflix wants to counter with successful series like Stranger Things and other strong productions. Because there is also the other way around, and many games pose tough competition for Netflix. So it remains exciting.
How do you see it? Do you prefer to watch Netflix in the evening or play Fortnite or watch streams from well-known Fortnite pros like Ninja or Tfue?
