Since Monday, interested players can register with Epic for a chance to receive an invitation for the mobile version of Fortnite: Battle Royale. The invitations will not be distributed randomly via lottery, but targeted, as Epic has now revealed.
Fortnite: Battle Royale is achieving one success after another. The game’s developers, Epic, now want to conquer the mobile market as well. They promise a full-fledged Fortnite: Battle Royale experience with the same gameplay, the same map, and regular updates.
To take part in the first round of Fortnite: Battle Royale on smartphones and tablets, you need an Apple device. Fortnite Mobile currently runs only on iOS.
Fortnite on Android will follow in the coming months, according to Epic. However, those who thought the invitations to interested players would be sent randomly are mistaken, as Epic employee Nick Chester has now revealed.
First come, first served, right?
According to Nick Chester, factors such as the order of registration, distance to the data center, and the selected model (on which the game will be played) play a role.
At least the order of registration raises questions. After all, the site was closed for maintenance for a long time after a short time window. The few players who were able to register before this maintenance will likely have an advantage. However, how Epic will balance this is not known.
Regarding the Apple device on which you want to play Fortnite: Battle Royale, you need not worry that only the latest iPads or the iPhone X will be supported. Epic wants to test the game behavior on as many different devices as possible – players with an iPhone 6S therefore have the same chances as the iPad Pro lineup.
The distance to data centers and access points also plays a similar role. Epic wants to test whether all players – whether close to or far from the data centers – receive a stable gaming experience. It can therefore be assumed that location will also play a role in the selection.
Will players’ experiences matter?
When selecting the invited players, other factors can be considered. Factors such as playtime, number of wins, or personal K/D may play a role in the selection.
However, Epic will presumably diversify in this regard as well. Players with different skills and play durations will be selected to ensure the widest possible range.
Anyone who has registered with Epic for the mobile version will have seen that Epic asked whether you have played Fortnite before. It is not excluded that especially players who have had no prior contact with Fortnite will be invited – a large pool of experienced players is already available.
But nothing helps – interested players will simply have to wait. Epic has assured that more and more players will be invited in the coming weeks and months. Sooner or later, everyone will be able to play Fortnite: Battle Royale on their smartphone or tablet.
