Fortnite and PUBG are not only engaged in a fierce battle for the battle royale throne on PC and console, but also as a mobile game. Fortnite has significantly fewer downloads on iOS than PUBG, but earns more money.

Fortnite impresses players with in-game items
Fortnite Mobile leaves PUBG behind: According to Bloomberg, Epic Games generated around $92 million in revenue with Fortnite Mobile in eleven weeks. The mobile version of PUBG only reached $19 million in the same period.
The difference is quite remarkable and becomes even more interesting when considering that PUBG Mobile was downloaded twice as often as Fortnite.
69 out of 100 Fortnite players spend money in the shop!
Why is Fortnite more successful? The purchasing power of Fortnite players is significantly higher than that of PUBG. According to a study by LendEDU that observed 1,000 Fortnite players, about 69 percent spent money in the in-game shop.
- 58.9% spent money on cosmetic outfits or characters
- 18.06% bought gliders
- 13.52% spent money on harvesting tools
- 9.52% used real money to buy emotes and dance moves
Time-limited skins and battle pass are probably the hit
The reason for this is that players find Fortnite’s monetization system appealing and therefore accept it. There are virtually no loot boxes where no one knows what they will receive. Instead, Epic Games offers time-limited skins. These cost between 8 and 20 euros, but are not constantly available.
As a player, you don’t want to miss these skins and therefore seize the opportunity immediately. Additionally, many players say that the Fortnite battle pass offers a fair deal. For 9.50 euros, you get skins and other items as well as additional in-game currency (V-Bucks) worth 15 euros.
Fortnite’s revenue could further increase with the Android release. Since Fortnite as a mobile game is currently only available for iOS devices and is expected to be released for Android later this summer, the revenue might significantly increase when the Android version is released.
