In Fortnite, developer Epic has announced a solution regarding players who use mouse and keyboard on PS4 and Xbox One. They will compete against each other in the future.
Who said this? A community manager from Epic, Nathan Moon, announced on Reddit that they are currently working on a matchmaking technique that will pit players against each other based on their input devices.
More information is expected next week, but the summary is: “If you play with a mouse and keyboard, then you play against others with a mouse and keyboard.”
What could this mean? This could mean two things:
- Either console players with mouse and keyboard play against PC players
- Or there is a separate pool of players on PS4 and Xbox One who use mouse and keyboard
Mouse and keyboard frowned upon on PS4 and Xbox One
What is behind this? The classic console player prefers a gamepad, with which they can relax on the couch. For them, mouse and keyboard belong in the office and not in gaming.
However, mouse and keyboard provide significant advantages in gaming. Especially in Fortnite, as they allow for more precise aiming and faster building.
Therefore, “mouse and keyboard” players on consoles are often seen as tryhards who want to gain an unfair advantage. There are several vendors that specifically sell mouse and keyboard setups for PS4 and Xbox One.
Particularly skilled players are also suspected of using mouse and keyboard.
Rule for fair eSports
Discussion intensified in Fortnite: In recent weeks, PC players have particularly complained that players on PS4 and Xbox One have an unfair advantage in eSports.
A major point here was that eSports players with “mouse and keyboard” were extremely advantaged over regular players on PS4 and Xbox One. PC eSports players found it harder to dominate their “normal” opponents on PC as much as console players dominated theirs.
