In Fortnite: Battle Royale, according to professionals and data miners, the skill-based matchmaking is finally said to have been removed. This only applies to the “Teams” mode, but players might still be pleased about it.
What kind of matchmaking is this? Skill-based matchmaking is about matching players with similar or equal performances in a game.
The better you play, the stronger the opponents become. Conversely, inexperienced players may face weaker opponents or even encounter bots (computer-controlled players):
- strong players win less often compared to “connection-based” matchmaking. For them, every match feels tough, like “serious as in the Olympics”
- weaker players, however, win more often, reach the endgame, and have successful experiences
Is skill-based matchmaking finally removed?
This is how it looks now in Fortnite: Several professionals and data miners now share that the skill-based matchmaking has been removed from Fortnite. However, this does not apply to all modes, but only to the 4-player team mode.
However, Epic Games has not yet provided any public confirmation or announcement regarding this significant change.
Pro player claims that the matchmaking has been removed
What does the Fortnite pro say? Twitch streamer Ali “SypherPK” Hassan posted a YouTube video where he states that he received information from an Epic employee. He confirmed that the skill-based matchmaking has been removed from the Teams mode.
“This is a pretty big change. It will make the matches more comfortable and less sweaty.”

But this statement is not the end, as the pro wants to prove that it has really been removed from the game. He is starting a round of “Teams” and goes solo. He wants to show that the matches without the matchmaking are much easier.
He plays 2 rounds and achieves 15 eliminations in the first round but cannot win. However, in the second round, he wins the match with a total of 24 eliminations.
Players were annoyed by skill-based matchmaking
What does the community think about skill-based matchmaking? Some players might be pleased about the removal of the matchmaking, although it only affects one mode for now.
There are indeed some players who want the matchmaking completely out of the game. Shortly after it was introduced, players were already complaining about it, but Epic went through with the plan.
One wish of the players for Season 2 was the removal of skill-based matchmaking. This wish, however, was not fulfilled. Especially console players feel disadvantaged when they have to compete against PC players.
Whether the removal of skill-based matchmaking is limited to the squad mode or if more modes will benefit from it soon remains unclear. We will probably have to wait for Epic Games to comment on this. However, those who do not want to fight at all and prefer to hang out leisurely should definitely check out the new Party Royale mode.
