Due to a lawsuit between Epic and Apple, Fortnite has been removed from the Apple Store. Since then, iOS users have been unable to play the popular shooter. However, there is now a workaround to make this possible again.
Starting next week, Fortnite will be playable on iOS again – but only through a clever workaround. Fortnite fans who own Apple devices have been unhappy for the past few months. Following a lawsuit between Epic and Apple, Fortnite was removed from the iOS App Store and has not been playable on iOS devices such as the iPhone or iPad since then.
Why is Fortnite running on iOS again? Now, Fortnite players on iOS can get started again, albeit in a roundabout way. Although Apple still does not provide Fortnite, it is now playable via the cloud.
The popular Battle Royale is now available on GeForce NOW, Nvidia’s cloud gaming service. This is a limited-time closed beta for mobile devices.
This way, mobile gamers can play Fortnite on their Apple devices with touch controls. However, this will not work through an installed app. Instead, the game runs through the Apple web browser Safari, which is installed on your iPhones and iPads.
Fortnite players are now relying on the cloud
How can I play Fortnite on iOS again? Players using GeForce NOW can now sign up for the limited-time closed beta of Fortnite for mobile devices (via nvidia.com).
If you want to register for a membership now, you will also be automatically eligible for this closed beta.
How much does GeForce NOW cost? One downside is that you have to pay for this free-to-play game using this method. There are 2 subscriptions for GeForce NOW: free and priority.
With the free subscription, you can play for a maximum of 1 hour at a time. If too many players want to play simultaneously, you will also have to wait in a queue for your chance. This could become a problem given Fortnite’s popularity.
With priority, you can play for up to 6 hours straight with better graphics. If there are queues, you have priority access to the premium servers. This subscription costs €49.99 for 6 months.
What else do you need to consider? In addition to the potential costs, there are other things to consider. The quality of your gaming experience heavily depends on your internet connection. Depending on your situation, this solution may not be satisfactory. In particular, delays in input controls and image quality can become an issue.
Whether cloud gaming is a good solution for iOS players remains to be seen. Currently, other clouds are also concerning Fortnite players:
