In Fortnite the update 14.40 has been deployed. On PC, the download was significantly larger, but now the game is 60 GB smaller after the patch.
What kind of update is this? The update 14.40 was deployed today, on Wednesday, October 21. This also marked the start of Fortnite: Nightmares. Although the patch brought some new content for the Halloween event, the download was not larger.
For PC players, however, the update was much larger, as they had to download a total of 27 GB for it. Fortnite Status announced this on Twitter.
What does this mean? The reason for the large patch size on PC, as Fortnite Status also states, is that this was for adjustments on the PC and then ensures that Fortnite uses 60 GB less storage space on the platform.
This would also mean that the downloads for future updates would be smaller and improve loading performance. The true difference in storage space is shown here. Previously, Fortnite (only Battle Royale) used 84.4 GB, and now only 27.5 GB is left.
Players are happy and worried about it
How is the storage space reduction being received by players? The fact that Fortnite takes up much less storage space has a positive effect for PC players, as they now save significantly more space. They can then use this for other games or updates.
This change seems to be positively received by players. Under the Twitter posts from Fortnite Status and Lucas7yoshi, they comment that they are happy. One player even thanks Fortnite because it has saved his PC:
But not only joy exists regarding this change, as some players wonder how Epic was able to reduce the game size so much. A concern arises: Was the old map from Chapter 1 deleted from the data?
So did they delete the (Athena) map? You just destroyed the dreams of all 5-year-olds, including my little brother.

What does this mean? At the start of Chapter 2 in Fortnite we received a completely new map. Before that, players landed on the same map for 10 seasons, which underwent slight changes each time.
The new map from Chapter 2 is only 4 seasons old, but some players still held hopes that the old map would eventually return. The fact that Fortnite is now so “small” makes them fear that the old map has been deleted and will therefore never return.
The return of old items is not uncommon in Fortnite. There are always old skins that return to the item shop with a new style. I, Eilyn, often fall for this trick and am then silly enough to buy the skins again.
