Thanks to the new Chapter 3, Fortnite has transitioned to the new Unreal Engine 5. Now the question arises whether one notices a real difference and if so, what that might be. We show you what Epic has spruced up in the battle royale shooter.
What is the Unreal Engine? In game development, the engine refers to a program responsible for the internal processes of the game. The correct generation of the map, accurately reproducing inserted sound, and keeping the game running during use are among the tasks that such a developer program must undertake.
The Unreal Engine refers to the developer program from Epic Games. It has already been announced that future games will be equipped with the 5th generation of the engine. Epic has now taken a step further and optimized Fortnite after the Chapter 3 release with the new Unreal engine.
We will show you if new features can be discovered:
Fortnite and Unreal Engine 5 – Do you notice differences from the old engine?
To illustrate the differences, we embed a YouTube video from S bench, who conducts a graphics comparison before and after Chapter 3.
After the update to 19.00, there weren’t really many changes at first glance. Many players hoped, as in Epic’s UE5 presentations, that all objects on the map would be broken down into every molecule upon impact or force. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Therefore, we list all the visible changes that we have spotted so far:
- The sky looks more natural and abstract, just like in nature
- Large trees can be chopped down and logs roll away
- Winds are visible and pass by you
- Snow on the ground shines and reflects
- Impending natural disasters look natural and powerful
- Flowing water looks somewhat more natural
- Burnt ground produces real soot and looks more realistic
- Better shadows from players
What do the players say? Opinions are divided. Many players are disappointed that not everything received an upgrade. They expected Fortnite to be completely spruced up, but many were disappointed. Players comment with opinions such as:
I didn’t expect the stuff to look particularly good, especially on a mid-range console like a PS4. But I literally noticed no difference, and that shocked me. […] Yes, to be fair, the tornado looked like a lot on a console, and it was breathtaking to see how smoothly it worked. But otherwise, I could swear it still looks crazily similar to Chapter 2.

It becomes clear that many players do not understand how an engine works. These programs bring changes, but they are not solely for graphical polishing. With the implementation of the 5th generation, Epic has created a path to bring better and more impactful updates in the future.
Are more changes coming? So far, the teased storms and tornadoes are still pending, but in upcoming updates, you can expect such new natural phenomena. They will tear down and destroy buildings, carry away vehicles and items, and you can also ride on them.
What do you think of the new engine? Do you also think there should be more potential? Let us know in the comments what you think!
