In Fortnite: Battle Royale (PC, PS4, iOS, Switch & Xbox One) almost 100,000 cheaters got themselves caught. A supposed aimbot and V-Bucks generator quickly took control of the web traffic of the victims.
Cheat tool turns out to be a virus: Regularly, you find offers for cheat tools such as aimbots or programs that spit out free V-Bucks. Unaware users sniff an advantage over the competition and bite. But often it backfires, as many supposed cheat tools are viruses.
Almost 100,000 users have recently been infected by just one such pest.
“Something is wrong!” – Streaming service raises alarm!
How was the hacking discovered? Through the game streaming service “Rainway,” you can also play Fortnite. Therefore, the employees noticed immediately that something was wrong. There were suddenly massive error messages, as someone was repeatedly trying to add new platforms.
Immediate red alert! This was immediately a warning signal for the employees at Rainway. Shortly after, they knew what had happened. A virus was circulating in Fortnite, disguised as an aimbot and V-Bucks generator. Over 78,000 players had downloaded and installed the tool unknowingly.
Virus redirects internet and steals data
This is how the virus operated: The virus immediately started working after installation and redirected all internet traffic from the infected machine through the hacker’s server. The hacker can then cheerfully read all data and steal passwords and bank information among other things. A so-called “Man in the Middle” attack.
Virus now dealt with: Fortunately, the employees of Rainway took immediate action and reported the program. After that, the hacker’s server disappeared again. However, the virus had certainly already caused some damage before it was discovered.
Just don’t! Therefore, Rainway boss Andrew Sampson has good advice for all players: “If something [a tool] sounds too good to be true, you probably need to format your PC soon.”
