The game Fortnite has been one of the most defining video games of our time since autumn 2017. The battle royale mode captivates millions of players on PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox One/Series X. Many people wonder: What does that actually mean in German? Where does the name Fortnite come from? What is the translation and what does it mean?
Fortnite was announced by Epic in 2011 – at that time, no one could have guessed that it would become such a hit today. The thing has grown so big that even non-gamers are confronted with the title. And the question arises more and more often: “What kind of name is ‘Fortnite’? What does the term mean and what does it mean in German?”
“Fortnite” is often misspelled, and people ask about it: Fortnight or Fort Nite.
Reference to the English term “Fortnight”
The name “Fortnite” is a reference to the word “Fortnight.” In English, this is a term that describes a period of “fourteen days” and comes from Old English. It means something like “14 nights.”
The term “Fortnight” can be broken down. Then you stand with the terms “Fort” (fortification) and “Night” (night). And exactly from that, from “Fort Nite,” Epic developed a concept for its game in 2011.
Since we don’t have this connection with “fourteen days” in German when it comes to “Fortnight,” the double meaning in this wordplay with “Fortnite” eludes us.
Fortnite – Name composition: Fortress for the night
Fortnite as a game name refers to the original mode “Save the World.” In that mode, players build fortifications (Forts) to protect themselves from zombie-like husks at night (Night).
While players collect loot during the day phase, diligently building a fort and setting traps, at night it’s about retreating into the fort and destroying the attacking husks.
The term thus translates to something like “Fortress for the night.”
By now, the “Battle Royale” mode of Fortnite is significantly more popular than the “Save the World” mode, which has only been treated as a stepchild by Epic Games in recent years.
For the BR mode, the term “Fortnite” only fits to a limited extent.
