In Fortnite Battle Royale, developer Epic has announced a competition – the Boogie-Down Contest. But fans are unhappy with the winners. Many are also not pleased with the new emote that will be coming to Fortnite. And somehow, YouTube star PewDiePie is behind it.
Epic recently announced a fan competition. The short version: “Dance how you would dance in the game. There are prizes, and we will bring the best emote into the game.” The dances and gestures of Fortnite are quite popular. Even professional athletes are using them nowadays.
There is a strong allure that an original emote could find its way into the game. Additionally, Epic is tempting with a ton of V-Bucks, the premium currency of the game.
Epic said that the dances should
- be fun
- creative
- and original.
Based on these criteria, Epic would select a winner.
Star YouTuber PewDiePie mocks the competition
Already two weeks ago, the somewhat strange competition was in the crosshairs of the mocking YouTube star PewDiePie. He has a bit of a contentious relationship with Fortnite. It seems to annoy him that Fortnite is such a hype game that many who have nothing to do with gaming jump on it, including the Logan brothers. And somehow, Fortnite seems too commercial to him, or PewDiePie is just annoyed that for once it’s not about him on YouTube. It’s hard to say.
PewDiePie was particularly amused by the #Boogiedown competition itself because
- no music could be played – people are dancing without music for legal reasons
- and that many teenagers are sending in their videos, some of whom are not exactly in top physical shape or are extremely shy
However, PewDiePie somewhat defends the kids: Any dancer would look ridiculous without music and effects. However, that doesn’t stop him from enjoying the children.
The video in which PewDiePie essentially mocked “fat or shy kids dancing” reached over 5 million views on YouTube.
The actual announcement video for #BoogieDown from Fortnite only reached a measly 1.8 million views.
These are the 5 winning emotes, the first place will even come to Fortnite
The competition has now concluded over the weekend, and these 5 fan dances have won. They were chosen by Epic themselves.
Prizes include 10,000 V-Bucks for the top 10. Additionally, there are in-game trinkets. The top 5 will also receive a “real Boogie Bomb” from Epic. The winning emote will even be incorporated into the game.
Fans find the dances boring
On the internet platform Reddit, players are struggling with Epic’s selection. A much-discussed thread calls it “A truly sad day.”
Among them are comments from players saying:
- Hopefully the winning dance is free, because no one is going to buy that crap
- I swear the guy is just stomping on the damn ground and looks like a chicken
- These dances are just boring. I thought something original would come that people would remember.
Surprisingly, fans do have a favorite. It is this submission from a child that begins with the words: “If this comes to the game, I will probably shit my pants.”
The gag is: This very clip was also prominently featured in PewDiePie’s YouTube video. He had even put music over it.
Apparently, Epic has somewhat missed the taste of the community this time among the vocal fans of Fortnite on Reddit. Or what do you think?
