What is behind the settings? With the latest update, there are several new settings, including Nanite and Lumen.
“Nanite”, according to Epic, “provides high-resolution architectural geometry.” All objects in games consist of a few to many thousands of polygons. The developers explain that buildings consist of millions of polygons. This makes games look significantly prettier.
Behind Lumen is mainly ray tracing. This provides better lighting and more realistic reflections. This makes water, metal, or smooth surfaces like ice look significantly more realistic. This is combined with “Virtual Shadow Maps”: every single object casts a shadow.
You can turn the new features on and off by yourself – depending on whether you want the enhancements or prefer to focus on FPS.
