Fortnite: Battle Royale has once again proven its immense popularity. It beat Rockstar’s western epic Red Dead Redemption 2 at the coveted Golden Joystick Video Game Awards.
What are the Golden Joystick Awards? These are official awards for particularly outstanding games that are awarded annually in the UK. It’s something like an Oscar ceremony for games. The Golden Joystick Awards have been awarded since 1983 and are therefore highly sought after.
Awards are given for outstanding games in categories such as [Platform] Game of the Year, Best Storytelling, Best VR Game, Best Indie Game, Most Anticipated Game, and the Ultimate Game of the Year.
How are the ratings determined? The decision on which game wins in which category was previously made by British viewers. However, now you can participate online and cast your vote. It’s a public award.
Fortnite Takes Home the Best Award
Which games have won? Among the winners are masterpieces like:
- God of War (Best Storytelling, Best Visual Design, Best Audio, Best PS4 Game of the Year)
- Monster Hunter World (Best Coop Game)
- Overwatch (eSport Game of the Year)
- Cyberpunk 2077 (Most Wanted)
- PUBG Mobile (Best Mobile Game)
- World of Tanks (Still Playing Around)
- Fortnite (Best Competitive Game)
- Red Dead Redemption 2 (Critic’s Choice Award)
The ultimate award goes to Epic: However, the ultimate recognition “Ultimate Game of the Year” is particularly coveted, awarded to the craziest game of the year.
In this category, Red Dead Redemption 2 was also a strong contender, as Rockstar’s epic received hugely positive feedback from fans and critics alike, being considered a masterpiece and a new reference in open-world design and atmosphere.
Why Fortnite?
Red Dead 2 wins only one award: Ultimately, at the Golden Joystick Awards, Red Dead 2 only received the Critic’s Choice Award. The reason for Fortnite’s victory may partly be its enormous cultural influence.
Fortnite as a cultural phenomenon: Athletes widely imitate emotes from the game, children dress up in droves as Fortnite skins for Halloween, and streaming stars like Ninja appear in recognized US sports magazines and visit popular talk shows.
In this light, Fortnite is also a phenomenon outside of its millions of players and is rightly considered the ultimate game of the year, whether you like it or not.
In this leaked mode, Fortnite even approaches Red Dead Redemption 2:
