Fortnite has reached over 20 million downloads thanks to the Battle Royale PvP mode. This surpasses the major competitor PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG), which has 17 million players.
Fortnite was originally a pure PvE co-op loot shooter, but now there is a popular PvP mode called Battle Royale. In this mode, you can fight each other in true PUBG fashion on a deserted island. As the gameplay is heavily reminiscent of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, there has already been some trouble with its developer Bluehole.
This has actually turned the PUBG developer into a promoter for the competition, especially since Fortnite: Battle Royale is both free-to-play and playable on the consoles PS4 and Xbox One. PUBG is currently only available on PC.
So it’s not surprising that Fortnite now has more registered players than PUBG.
Fortnite leads in player numbers, but PUBG still has the most concurrent gamers
Overall, Fortnite boasts more than 20 million registered players. PUBG has “only” 17 million.
We just passed 20 million players across all of Fortnite since launch! Thanks from the bottom of our ??? pic.twitter.com/LuVV5vb7wj

Keep in mind: PUBG costs money and can only be played via Steam on PC. The version for Xbox One is still pending and whether it will ever be released on PlayStation 4 is still unclear. Therefore, Fortnite currently has the edge thanks to console players.
However, PUBG still clearly leads in terms of concurrent players. More than 2 million gamers have played PUBG simultaneously. The record for Fortnite is 800,000.
It remains exciting to see how the upcoming Xbox One release of PUBG will affect the situation. Will Fortnite be able to maintain its lead on consoles, or will players flock to the “original”?
