With the announcement that Fortnite: Battle Royale is coming to mobile devices, Epic has dropped a little bombshell. But that’s not all. Fortnite offers cross-play and cross-progression on smartphones and tablets. Isn’t that unfair?
Anyone who regularly watches Ninja’s streams knows what capable PC players can do to their opponents in Fortnite: Battle Royale. And now pros like Ninja should also be allowed to take apart people on smartphones thanks to cross-play? It’s not as bad as Epic revealed!
What does cross-play and cross-progression mean in Fortnite: Battle Royale?
Epic has announced that smartphone players can compete against PC and PS4 players. The other platform (iOS / Android) will also be able to compete with each other. This greatly increases the matchmaking pool.

Only the Xbox One was initially excluded from the announcement. Now Microsoft has announced that they are working to participate in cross-play as well.
Additionally, you can log in to your Epic account on your smartphone or tablet and enjoy the same progress that you have already achieved on consoles or PC. It is therefore not necessary to purchase a second Battle Pass on the smartphone.
This is called cross-progression and works similarly to the cross-save functionality of some games between the PS Vita and the PlayStation 4.

But if PC players play with mouse and keyboard while mobile users are using the touchscreen, a big imbalance arises, right? According to Epic, you don’t necessarily have to deal with this!
Cross-play between smartphone/tablet and PC is optional!
The official announcement hinted at bad omens, but shortly after, Epic announced via Twitter that the cross-play option between PC and smartphone is merely optional. PC players will never enter the lobby of mobile players.
On the other hand, mobile gamers can join the matchmaking lobby of PC players via settings. This setting is deactivated by default, so it must be confirmed manually.

Those who were afraid that hordes of PC players would descend upon helpless touchscreen users can rest easy.
