Fortnite’s jovial and entertaining mode Battle Royale pits you against 99 human opponents in battle. Despite the simple game principle, each round offers many tactical approaches that can determine victory or defeat.
The choice of the right equipment needs to be well thought out, as your inventory slots are limited. Alongside weapons and the corresponding ammunition, there are all sorts of useful items scattered around the large map.
The Weapons in Fortnite: Battle Royale
The weapons in the Battle Royale mode offer enough variations for every preferred range. From the common pistol to the explosive rocket launcher, everything is included. The quality of the weapons is based on established tiers, which you can assign based on colors:
- Gray – common
- Green – uncommon
- Blue – rare
- Purple – epic
- Orange – legendary
You can primarily find weapons at named locations on the map. However, there are also smaller buildings between these areas where you can make big loot.
The distribution changes with each round. Did you find an epic shotgun in a specific building in Tomato Town? In the next round, you might only find a gray pistol there.
The Best Weapon in Fortnite Battle Royale? Everything with High Range
Due to the size of the map, weapons with great range are the best option in Fortnite Battle Royale. Sniper rifles and assault rifles are perfect for long-range battles.
However, you should not neglect close combat. With a shotgun or a submachine gun, you are equipped for all kinds of skirmishes.

Assault Rifles
Assault rifles are suitable for both close and long-range combat depending on the variant found. They reward critical hits, which deal a lot of damage. The following types of assault rifles can be found in Battle Royale mode:
- M16 (common, uncommon, rare) – Of the available assault rifles, the M16 is the weakest. Make sure you have a favorable position before engaging in battle with this weapon.
- SCAR (epic, legendary) – Perfect for medium distances, but you can hit easily even at long ranges with the SCAR.
- Assault Rifle with Scope (rare, epic) – The scope is useless at short distances. At long range, the assault rifles are unfortunately not much better. Instead, grab a sniper rifle.
- Burst Assault Rifle (common, uncommon, rare) – Due to the lower recoil, burst assault rifles are extremely good. However, at long distances, you will find it harder to hit all shots.
Pistols
Pistols are the weakest weapons in battle royale mode, but they are very common – and against opponents with pickaxes, you still have a significant advantage with pistols. The variety of pistols is not great; there are only two representatives:
- Pistol (common, uncommon, rare) – The weapon deals less damage than the revolver, but its fire rate exceeds the damage over time (DPS) of the revolver.
- Revolver (common, uncommon, rare) – The revolver deals significantly more individual damage than the standard pistol, but you must compromise on the rate of fire.
Shotguns
Shotguns are the ultimate weapon for close combat and deal powerful damage. Careless opponents can be taken down in seconds. There are also only two representatives for shotguns:
- Pump Shotgun (common, uncommon) – The pump shotgun deals more damage than the tactical shotgun, but the reload time is significantly longer.
- Tactical Shotgun (uncommon, rare, epic) – Aim for the head and torso with the tactical shotgun to deal massive damage.
SMGs
SMGs are well-suited for close combat but stand no chance against shotguns. Be sure to stay out of range of pump shotguns, then you also have good chances of coming out victorious from a fight with submachine guns. Also, there are two variants of submachine guns:
- Submachine Gun (common, uncommon) – The standard submachine gun. Deals less damage than the tactical SMG, but is found more frequently.
- Tactical SMG (uncommon, rare, epic, legendary) – Much rarer than the standard representative, but offers a larger magazine and more damage.
Sniper Rifles
Sniper rifles are excellent for taking out careless opponents at long distances. Since the projectiles of the weapons do not work on a hit-scan principle (trigger pull and hit collision happen simultaneously) but take time to reach the target, moving targets are particularly hard to hit.
An opponent player who has you in their sights will be much harder to eliminate. Careless opponents can be comfortably dealt with using snipers. There are two variants found in Battle Royale mode:
- Bolt Action Sniper (rare, epic, legendary) – This weapon is excellent for aiming and deals very high damage. The reload time is a major downside of this variant. If you aim cleanly and concentrated, you can cause chaos among your enemies with this weapon (as long as they are still alive).
- Semi-Auto Sniper (epic, legendary) – The semi-auto sniper rifles fire faster and offer a larger magazine than the other representative in this weapon class.
Heavy Weapons
Heavy weapons can be divided into rocket and grenade launchers. They represent the heavy artillery in Fortnite and are perfect for flushing out enemy positions. Especially in the endgame, heavy weapons can determine victory or defeat. Accordingly, they are very rare on the map. There are two types of heavy weapons:
- Rocket Launcher (rare, epic, legendary) – Excellent for blowing up cover. The downside is that nearby players will be startled by the noise of the rocket launcher. Additionally, the trajectory makes it easy to locate the creator.
- Grenade Launcher (rare, epic, legendary) – Same principle as the rocket launcher, but the explosions are delayed and smaller. Offers 6 shots in the magazine as a trade-off.
Melee Weapons and Grenades
The melee repertoire is limited. In fact, you can only hit your opponents with your starting weapon, the pickaxe – which is not what you really want. The pickaxe is best suited for resource harvesting.
Pro Tip: If you want to relieve fallen opponents of their loot, but want to keep your weapons, equip the pickaxe. Now you only pick up ammunition and resources, as the pickaxe cannot be exchanged.
The grenade is similar to the grenade launcher for chasing enemies out of self-made shelters. They are also useful when you have emptied your magazine and want to gain some breathing room.

The Items in Fortnite: Battle Royale
Those who loot various houses in search of loot will sooner or later hear a penetrating humming sound. This sound signals a nearby treasure chest. In the scattered treasure chests, you can find the best stuff.
Keep an eye out for small green containers as well. These contain ammunition for your weapons, which would otherwise only be useful as paperweights. Unlike treasure chests, ammunition boxes do not announce themselves with sounds, but you will find them more often near treasure chests.
Besides weapons, you can often find useful stuff in treasure chests that improve your chances of survival:
- Shield Potions – Provide a 50% boost to your shield. Use them immediately when you find yourself in a safe position. You can also find an even rarer version of the shield potion that heals your health points and builds up a shield.
- Bandage – Heals you for 15 health points up to a maximum of 75 health points. Use the bandage after a fight if you have taken damage.
- Medkit – Extremely rare, the medkit provides full healing. While you use the medkit, you are vulnerable for a whole 10 seconds. So be careful to only use the medkit when you are safe.
Strategic Map Points in Fortnite: Battle Royale
Even the choice of the starting point after jumping from the Battle Bus can influence the course of the match. The following aspects should be considered when choosing your jump location:
- Those who land in the middle usually have an easier time staying in the eye of the storm
- Named areas offer many rewards, but also many competing players that you must contend with for the loot
Anarchy Acres
Anarchy Acres is located in the north of the map and mostly consists of barns with several floors full of loot. Watch out for the open fields around Anarchy Acres; they offer a lot of potential for ambush.
Fatal Fields
The area with the reassuring name is located in the south of the map. Here, too, there are barns for you to rummage through. Since the area is quite popular, keep an eye out for other players. Try to land in such a way that you can loot at least part of the area before you have to contend with your opponents.
Flush Factory
Usually, not much is going on here because the area is far from the center of the map and offers little loot.
Greasy Grove
Equipped with a fast-food restaurant and gas station, the area in the southwest part of the map offers some excellent loot opportunities. Here you should pay more attention to other players, as the area is above average in popularity.
Lonely Lodge
The name of this area is program. The area is quite unpopular as it is on the outskirts of the map. However, it’s definitely worth a detour for the loot opportunities. Should you find yourself in a situation where the storm eye focuses over this area, you can remain long in the watchtower that offers a fantastic view.
Loot Lake
The prominent lake in the center of the map is a popular destination. The two buildings at the boat dock provide plenty of loot. If you are looking for thrills, you can also venture into the building in the middle of the lake. However, you should be extremely careful. When you want to leave the building and the lake, you have to go through the water – making you the perfect target!
Moisty Mire
On the southeastern edge of the map lies the area Moisty Mire, offering a lot of swamp and some wooden huts for loot collection. Additionally, you can find tons of useful items in hollow trees. However, be aware that you have to traverse the swamp for some items, which slows you down and makes you an easy target.
Pleasant Park
Pleasant Park is located in the northwest part of the map and offers excellent opportunities to grab equipment. The area is very popular, so be cautious. To get loot as quickly as possible, land on a roof and break it with your pickaxe. It’s not uncommon to fall directly into a treasure chest.
Retail Row
Retail Row is also a hot landing spot for players. Look out for shotguns to surprise careless opponents. Retail Row offers various opportunities to obtain loot.
Wailing Woods
The forests in the northeastern part of the map house a hut that offers a lot of potential as a hideout. The place is usually not crowded with other players but is inconveniently located and quite far from the center of the map.
