In Fortnite: Battle Royale, you can now purchase a Battle Pass that grants you access to cosmetic items and experience bonuses. Is it worth it? Or is it an attempt to squeeze money from customers?
Epic Games regularly expands Fortnite with new content. Just in time for Christmas, the second season starts in the fun multiplayer mode Battle Royale. Instead of the grenade launcher, you can now throw snowballs, the trees and bushes are festively decorated, and in the PvE mode, the zombies wear Christmas outfits while trying to get you.
Fortnite has many players, but only a few pay…
Since the Battle Royale mode is free, Epic has to find other ways to monetize. The skins and costumes that were offered for sale have not yet tempted players. While Fortnite has record player numbers, people are spending too little money in the game.
The Battle Pass is supposed to change that. But can it work?
New Battle Pass offers hours of grind with dozens of rewards
With the new season 2, Epic introduces so-called “Tiers” that you can level up in addition to your normal level. You increase this Tier by raising your account level or completing the daily challenges.
The Battle Pass runs from December 14 to February 20.
This way, some rewards can already be unlocked. However, the Battle Pass offers much more, attracting players with various costumes, experience bonuses, and in-game currency VBucks.
The Battle Pass costs 950 VBucks, which is about 10 euros. The twist is this: If you level up to the maximum value of 70, you get more VBucks back than you spent on the Battle Pass. Epic talks about rewards worth 12,000 VBucks.
Community reactions are positive
The first reactions from the community are mostly positive. The items are purely cosmetic, the medieval-looking costumes are impressive, and the price of the Battle Pass is fair.
The originally sold costumes or skins for the axe were too expensive for many players (sometimes up to 20 euros), the Battle Pass is in this regard a step in the right direction.
75 to 150 hours are estimated to unlock everything
Concerns have been raised about the time needed to unlock everything from the Battle Pass. You need to log in regularly and at least complete the two daily challenges, which will guarantee a level up.
Fortnite claims that you need about 75 to 150 hours to unlock all rewards.
However, in combination with normal level-ups, it should be possible to unlock everything by the end of season 2 on February 20, 2018. You can also increase the level using VBucks, but that is very expensive (150 VBucks).
Battle Pass is just a special offer – likely to be more expensive in the future
The Battle Pass in its current form is merely a special offer. It is expected that this will become more expensive in future seasons. Many players on Reddit see this skeptically. Many believe that the current price is appropriate.
